First question is what is the player that you are trying to use to watch dvds on your system. Example divx, vlc. If you are using windows media player make sure that the codecs are compatible or you have the latest codecs, you can download the codecs from this website http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm. Then also tried another a known good dvd.

My media player want play dvd's

Maybe your screen resolution needs to be higher? What type of error message are you getting? Are these dvd's that you were able to play before?

Most computers will have problems playing dvd's that someone made for you on their computer. Try a store purchased dvd and see if it plays.

You can always reinstall windows media player at Microsoft's site below.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/windows-media-player

You can also try the VLC Player. It comes with drivers and codec. I've seen it solve a lot of issues that Media Player could not fix.

Try using VLC as your player. Go to www.google.com and in the search box type "download vlc" (without the quotes). Look for the Video Lan download from site www.videolan.org/vlc Download and install it. It downloads and installs in 3 minutes or so. It's a very fast player, smooth and it can play just about any type of dvd formats and media. It's totally FREE.

I recently bought Sims 3 for PC. So, when I open my IBM disk tray and put the disk in, the computer doesn't recognize it and I cannot install the game. This game was a little expenisve, so I would

Hi Elizabeth,

Depending on the model of your IBM PC, it could be that it has a CD drive and not a DVD drive. The Sims 3 game is on a DVD. If this is the case you will have to upgrade your CD player to a DVD player.

To test if your drive is working insert an original music CD into the drive and see if it plays. If it does play you most likely have a CD player and not a DVD player, which means you will have to upgrade to a DVD player/writer drive anyway.
These are relatively inexpensive and retail for approximately $20 to $50.

Feel free to reply should you need any further assistance.
Best wishes,

I can't get any web player to stay full screen. Youtube, Megavideo, JWplayer, tvdex, hulu, the list goes on. Please help. It isn't fixed by changing the accelerate video settings thing.

If megavideo is full "web browser" page size click the image/player after you hit the green play button and the video is playing, then it opens a new window with the small player in it, then hit the only dark grey button that falls down screen that says like "cinema on" to turn it off and make the player show, play the video, and now you can full screen it and keep it full screened! If plugin questions keep popping up it's because spam ads or the video itself needs you to keep pushing yes.

I purchased a plextor px-870a dvd/cd writer to replace the cd writer in our computor it is a dell with a dvd player in the top slot and a cd writer in the next slot down but the cd writer stoped working so...

On the back of a CD-writer or a DVD-writer is a small grid (2 rows) of gold pins.

Each vertical set of pins is labelled: MA(ster), SL(ave), and C(able)S(elect).
Be sure that one drive has a small jumper between the MA pins,
and the other drive has a small jumper between the SL pins.

Was there any software on CD-ROM that came with the DVD-writer,
e.g., software to play DVDs, and software to write CDs and DVDs?
To "play" a DVD, you'll need that software.
To "play" a music CD, Windows Media Player will suffice.

The problem you are having is the DVD player. Not all DVD players will play a burned DVD. Some set top DVD players are know for being very picky about what type of DVD's they will play, and Phillips is very bad about this.

If you have the owners manual for the DVD player, look inside and see what type of disc's are playable. if it should play them DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R. DVD+RW should all be listed.

Right now about 80% of DVD players do not play burned DVD's

In time they all will play them, but for some unknownn reason, some are still made without this ability.

Also, not all DVD-R's are created equal.

The best quality of DVD's to buy for burning are Taiyo Yuden. But Sony, memorex, and Maxell are also pretty good.

One way to be certain about the quality of the burned DVD's is to take one to a friends house or anybody you know who has a set top DVD player and see if it plays in their DVD player.

That will at least tell you if the DVD's you are burning are at fault or not. But my guess is that you r Phillips is the culprit here.

I hope this was helpful to you, if so a good rating would really be appreciated.

I have been buring DVD's since they started selling them for the PC. compatibility has been the only problem I have had.
My sony DVD player plays everything I throw at it.

My pioneer dvr-104 doesn't read my dvd movies... what can i do to fix this?

desoshade is right, its probably a lack of software for playing dvds, if your dvd burner may have come with some if not you can try goo media center for free and its legal (its an open source application) I believe you can find it on sourceforge.net, VLC media player may also help, but more than likely you need a codec that supports playing dvds, they do exist for windows media player but they may not all be free, free alternatives do exists though with and without breaking any laws. MPlayer classic may also be useful, its been a while since I've had to deal with this sort of thing, usually watch movies on my mac or tv anymore  hope some of this is useful. good luck.

Slow DVD playback

Playing DVD's requires a bit of constant transfer from the drive to the controller and from the controller to the RAM. First thing I would try is disabling background programs. One very likely culprit is if you have anti-virus software that is running a scan in the background.

Have you tried different DVD's? The problem could be the DVD drive is not reading the DVD properly. Have you tried different players? Different players sometimes work better. I would also suggest making sure that your sound drivers are up to date.
