Go back to device manager. right click the cd rom name in device manager and click uninstall. right click on an empty area in device manager and click on scan for hardware changes. if this doesnt fix the issue try booting from a windows disk. if you are unable to do this than it may be a physical problem with the device. you may also want to try doing a system restore (if it is win me or higher) by going to start - accessories - system tools - and then system restore. follow the prompts from there.

Optical drives are more forgiving.
Make sure it has power (ejects). Check Device Manager in Safe Mode by pressing F8 during boot. Right click My Computer > Manage. Select Device Manager > View > Show Hidden Devices. Now delete all DVD/CD-ROMs and reboot. Windows will say "New Hardware Found" and install.

Im having trouble putting a new operating system.cd rom wont pick up

Please provide the complete details.. make and model number, operting system!
Make sure you've tested more than one CD in the disc drive, it is possible for one CD to be bad or dirty and not be read properly

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Settings
  3. Click Control Panel
  4. Double-click System
  5. Click the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager button or just the Device Manager tab.
Within Device Manager verify that the CD-ROM has no exclamation marks or red Xs. If listed with a yellow exclamation mark or red X, remove the CD-ROM by highlighting the drive and pressing the delete key and reboot the computer to reinstall the CD-ROM drive

My computer doesnt show the disk drive

The ! mark is telling you that the computer knows you have a CD-ROM drive it just does not know how to talk to the device aka (driver)

If you have the disk the laptop came with it should have the drivers for the CD-ROM. If you don't you will need to go online and type in the model of you CD-ROM and the driver needed for it. Once you download the driver and reboot your laptop when you check the device manager the ! mark should go away.

Sometimes you can just right click on the device with the ! mark and say update driver and it might find the driver automatically for you.

Good Luck

My acer Extensa 5620Z DVD/CD ROM drive is detected as USB mass storage that provides internet(Modem). When I remove the internet modem, the CD ROM is not listed in My computer. When I put CD or DVD in it...

That is a Vista problem with ACER. Delete the reference in device manager and restart and let the comp reco0gnize and reinstall ...just follow the screen instructions.

There is a registry setting that needs deleting but only if this doesn't work.

DVD drive on Toshiba Satellite M35X-S311 not working

Ooops! Hate it when I delete necessary stuff !!! Go into the device manager and uninstall the optical drive (cd/dvd drive), then reboot. It should find the drive and reinstall it. If it doesn't, then do a hardware search from the device manager. If it still doesn't find it, then do a system restore to a point before deleting the files.
