Copies and scans have vertical lines running thru the length of the page only when set to black and white mode and only when copying or scanning. Everything else is fine.

We have a Brother 4100 Fax Machine. When we send a fax or make a copy, there is a black bar about 2" wide that shows up the length of the page. It does not appear on incoming faxes. I believe it is...

Make sure the **** glass is clean, use a micro fiber cloth to wipe the debris/old toner or white out off the glass. restart the fax machine. If it prints this black line from a copy and it is 2" wide after you have cleaned both the glass and the white reference bar, most likley the scanner itself has failed.

I get lines and can't read the right side of copies that I make with the 1270e. How do I fix this?

You have not specified why you can't read the right side of copies and I am assuming that the reason is because the 'lines' are covering the text. I can offer a solution to the lines issue.

Most likely a fax has been sent or a page copied with 'white out' (Liquid Paper), still wet on the page. As the page feeds over the scanner, (a narrow strip of glass that runs across the width of the page along the feed path) the wet liquid paper comes off on the glass as a thin line and dries. Thereafter, when copying, scanning or sending a fax, the scanner light does not go through the liquid paper streak and the result when printed is a thin vertical line that runs the full length of the page. If this is the cause you will also find that faxes you send to other people will also have this line (although faxes you receive are not affected by this problem with your machine).

To fix the problem: follow the path that the paper travels when sending a fax or making a copy, until you find the scanner (narrow glass strip). Take a clean, soft cloth and a small amount of methylated spirit (or white spirit) and remove the now dried Liquid Paper from the glass. Clean the whole strip ensuring that the glass is left clean and dry.

I have a black line showing up on my faxed documents. I have opened it up, changed the film and re- set it, but the problem persists. The machine is about 5 years old.

Line down the scanned document on a HP LAser Jet 3050

If you are scanning using the Auto Document Feeder be sure to clean the glass where the documents get scanned. A small speck will cause a line down the page. On HP there is often a narrow strip of glass on the left side of the platen glass.

Has line down center of page when using ADFfor copying

Hi There,

There is a piece of glass that the machine uses to scan the page. it's like a 1/2 in wide, and the width of the paper.

This glass is dirty with a spec of toner or white out on it.

Clean this glass very good. you may have to use a razor blade, but be very careful not to cut the plastic around the glass or it will jam.

its quite possible the area that scans the paper(s) you are sending is dirty.
If the machine is one of those phone/fax/scanner/copier jobs, simply open the top panel, and with a damp cloth, wipe the runners that feed the paper through from left to right or right to left (just make sure any dirt you're wiping goes off to one side)
its also possible that a paper (that white-out was used on) that has been recently faxed, left some white out on the feeders

HORIZONTAL Lines on faxed/scanned pages.

I've seen this before. Since the printer portion is working fine that points to the scanner mechanism as the culprit. There are two things I have seen cause this. 1) If the line is a perfect rectangle all the way to the edge of the page then the light bar itself is dying and there isn't much you can do to save the unit. Send it in for warranty repair if you have the option. 2) If the line is more like a skid mark like you mentioned, then the paper that is being scanned is not pressing up fully against the light bar. Not enough light is bouncing off the page and the scanner can't read it well. This can also be caused by a roller not feeding correctly and then bunching up the paper a little bit. I would check the rollers for wear or something being off center. This can sometimes be caused if the machine has ran a high volume or thick paper. I would really think the cause would be one of these two since you are getting the marks at odd intervals, if the intervals were regular it could *possibly* be the drum but as I stated before, with the print function working right, I doubt it.
