When your dell system was purchase, their is a sticker there and that is the product key or if you have the original cd that came from dell, you can just directly reinstall it and it will not ask you to input your product key, because dell has its own way to know it but if you replace the motherboard then the cd from dell wont work.

Hey there,
Windows 7 wasn't released in 2004. That product key sounds like it's for Windows XP. You can't use a Windows XP product key on a Windows 7 Operating System. You'll need a product key for Windows 7 to be able to use it.
If you require any additional assistance, please return to this page and post a response. I will be happy to assist you further.

I bought the laptop Presario CQ61, no product key was given to me. I have been using the laptop very well for more than one year without any problem not until today 4th march, 2011 i was about typing...

Most notebooks have the Windows key printed on a "Cerificate Of Authenticity" (or "COA") sticker that is affixed to the underside of the computer. COA stickers look like these:
The key consists of the numbers and letters following the "Product Key". It consists of 25 characters in five groups of 5 digits separated by four hyphens, shown in the image above as:

If the key can not be authenticated or "Activated" by Microsoft, you will be provided choices as to how to proceed during activation. If the key is not authentic, you may be provided an opportunity to purchase a key directly from Microsoft. I would NOT purchase a key at this time from Microsoft, but rather contact HP Support to obtain assistance from them about the key.

Typically, major manufacturer's of notebook PCs "embed" the product key in the computer firmware - so it doesn't need to be manually entered if installing from the manufacturer's copy of Windows. This would require installing Windows again, but will be significantly cheaper than buying a new license for the notebook.

Of course, if the data on the PC needs to be accessed NOW - then purchasing a new key from Microsoft will be the quickest solution - although the most expensive.

I hope this helps and good luck.

Product key

Assuming you mean the product key for Windows, the product key should be on a sticker, usually on the bottom of the laptop. It is probably 25 digits mixed numbers and letters. You should have the disk it came with to install it - sometimes the product key will work with a disk from a different computer, but if the setup disk and your key are different versions it will not work. An example: If you do not have the original setup disk your computer came with, and your computer has XP home and you borrow a disk from someone but it is XP Pro, your number will not work. If your original disk was for XP home and it was with SP-2, (SP = Service Pack) a disk without SP-2 will not work. Plus, the original disk(s) usually came with the drivers you will need to reinstall Windows. You would be pretty lucky to install Windows and not need to download drivers to finish installation. Original setup disks from the manufacturer are not that expensive, and save a lot of time and frustration.

How I restablish Windows XP using a key that already exists on my laptop

download winxp manger from and check your key;and eben if you want to modify the key download Windows XP Product Key Modifier 1.0.0a from the url is :

or you can even manually modify the key
Here's How:

Click on Start and then Run.

In the text box in the Run window, type regedit and click OK. This will open the Registry Editor program.

Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder under My Computer and click on the (+) sign next the folder name to expand the folder.

Continue to expand folders until you reach the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrent VersionWPAEvents registry key.

Click on the WPAEvents folder.

In the results that appear in the window on the right, locate OOBETimer.

Right-click on the OOBETimer entry and choose Modify from the resulting menu.

Change at least one digit in the Value data text box and click OK. This will deactivate Windows XP.

Feel free to close Registry Editor at this point.

Click on Start and then Run.

In the text box in the Run window, type the following command and click OK.

%systemroot%system32oobemsoobe.exe /a

When the Let's activate Windows window appears, choose Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows and then click Next.

Click the Change Product Key button at the bottom of the window.

Don't worry about filling anything out on this screen.

Type your new, valid Windows XP product key in the New key: text boxes and then click the Update button.

You should now reactivate Windows XP by following the instructions on the Activate Windows by phone window which you should now be seeing or via the Internet by clicking the Back button and following the instructions on that screen.

If you'd rather postpone activating Windows XP until a later date, you can click the Remind me later button.

After activating Windows XP, you can verify that activation was successful by repeating steps 9 and 10 above.

The Windows Product Activation window that appears should say "Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit."

Do all these registry changes and commands make you a bit uneasy? Don't worry, it's really not that difficult if you follow each step exactly.

If you'd like some help, you should look at my Step by Step Guide to Changing the Windows XP Product Key. It's a complete walk-through of the process, with each step accompanied by a screen shot of exactly what you'll see plus a thorough description of what to do.

Still not comfortable making registry changes? Luckily there is another option if you need to change your Windows XP product key code. Winkeyfinder, a popular free product key finder program, also has the ability to easily change the Windows XP product key.

Winkeyfinder is an excellent alternative solution to changing the Windows XP product key code manually.

I recently given a cd that had windows xp on it and I installed on my pc and everything went fine but now I am prompted with a 30 day to activate the product key. When I enter my product key on the bottom...

The product key on the XP sticker on the bottom must match the specific Windows XP configuration you're running (a XP Home key won't activate a XP Pro installation). If this is the case, you'll have to purchase a valid license for the specific installation you have, or somehow acquire a valid key for same which hasn't been yet activated.

Your nearest Linux user group could well be swamped in unused XP and Vista CD-ROMs and keys (commonly referred to as "deletium"). You'll need to find someone willing to sell a "open" XP license and not an OEM one, which, while working, wouldn't be actually legit (it doesn't make sense, I know. But commercially and legally, it does). And you'd better get the sticker and replace yours, while you're at it.

There are also utilities out there which will disable the activation request and "unlock" XP, but apart from being illegal, they might interfere with product update and leave you vulnerable to viruses, exploits and the like, and an "unlocked" installation is liable to get locked again by some updated system patch, usually when you need it most. Unrecommended.

Have typed ma product keybuh cant get access to ma desktop

If you are refering to the activation window of Vista Operating System, you need to enter the Product Key which should be available at the bottom of the Notebook and it should be of 25 digits in length and it contains both Alphabets and Numbers.
Make sure that you enter the correct Product Number without any confusion between Zeros and alphabets like 'O' etc...
If you are sure that the typed Product Key is correct and still you are unable to use Windows, I recommend you to reinstall Windows using the Recovery Partition by pressing the F11 Key at startup or using the Recovery Disks you might have created.
NOTE : Performing a System Recovery will erase all the data in the Notebook and take it back to factory default settings.
If you are currently located in US or Canada, you can contact Microsoft directly and get the copy of Windows in your Notebook activated by calling 1-866-530-6599 and informing them about the situation and provide them the required details.
Hope this information is useful...

Hello anbesa,

Typically, the 25-digit key that you are looking for would be on the blue-green XP sticker on the bottom of your laptop. Do you have one there?
