We just acquired a 5th wheel trailer with a R-1480 that was working great until we experienced a power outage in our area. I supplied ac power from our Honda generator to complete watching a program on tv. As I turned on the generator outside, my wife heard a lot of arcing sounds coming from within the trailer, followed by a strong smell of electrical buning. I immediately shut off the generator and waited for our area ac power to be restored. After it was back on, I started to check everthing that was plugged in ie. tv, lights, refrig, etc. All seemed to function ok except the microwave oven would not turn on. The display was not lit or able to turn on the fan or light. Unplugged the oven, removed front control panel to check the fuse and found it to be ok. But a very strong burnt smell from within cavity of oven. Took it off the wall and into a sharp repair depot to be told that it was a switch kit. When I went to pick it up was told that after replacing the switch kit it did not work and that it was not economically feasible to repair. I brought it home thinking I could get another one just like it as I didn't want to replace the wall hanger. Would like to keep this one and replace whatever may be the problem. By the smell I felt the it could probably be the hv transformer. Any thoughts or suggestions would be kindly excepted thanks Bob
It's most likely the low voltage transformer that's part of the circuit board or a blown trace on the board. The HV transformer would only burn and smell if the unit was in a cook cycle.
The complete board assembly is only around $80. If you're really handy, you can order just the little transformer, but you'd have to remove (unsolder) the old one and install (resolder) the new one on. The circuit board is one assembly and it takes all of 30 minutes or less to replace from start to finish.
