Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook
I have an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop. I'm running VISTA SP1 but have had problems with the USB ports from day one, even under XP. They intermittently fail with an error message saying the device has mal-functioned. The devices attached are working because can plug them into my desktop and they work. The Aspire has an on-board web-cam which doesn't work properlyand seems to hog a USB port. I'm wondering if this is the cause of the problem? At one time, one of the USB ports worked, but now since trying to install the camera that final one has now failed.
Sounds like a shorted out board. If you use a faulty device.. these can EASILY short out the USB controllers on the motherboard.
Alternative is to purchase a "PCMCIA USB expansion card" till you can replace the motherboard.
