Question about Kenmore Elite 45986 Front Load Washer

1 Answer

Not working with wierd symptoms bad. i overloaded my five year old machine with a down comforter. i won't do that again.

But since then, the machine sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. sometimes, when i try to start it, all of the lights blink all at once. if i give it a minute, then it calms down, stops blinking, and i can run the load. sometimes once the load starts, it stops a few minutes in, and then locks the door. if i reset it(i hit run, then cancel and the door unlocks), it will then run fine. or, the third symptom, when it does run successfully, the clothes just aren't dry enough...still very wet. so i have to run an extra spin.

any ideas?? help!

Hi 5 years old ? from the symptoms you have described this is most probably the machines motor brushes are too low/worne as they all do in time this is not too difficult to diy repair if you feel confident ? the brushes in uk cost around £5 --£6 approx and to change them is easy by removing rear cover on machine you muat disconnect power/ drain pipe/ and turn off water supply pipe/s from machine ? the motor is rather like cars alternator in apearance?? disconnect power plug from it then you will have to look at motor and observe how it secures then remove bolts/nuts if you have new brushes to hand ??it will become obviouse how//where they fit and wire connects on each x2 at this it would be advisable after 5 yrs? to fit a new belt too? refit motor+belt adjust belt tension by adjusting motor on slide adjust then tighten? reassemble all parts in reverse then try a wash ? this is common prob especially after long time and for your info the down comforter load was the final nail in coffin but should have no probs after new brushes always think the positive waves! not the negative! good luck

This is a bad compressor, or overload-relay kit. Disconnect the power, remove the overload-relay from the compressor, and test the three compressor terminals for continuity . You should have continuity between each terminal, and you should not have continuity between any terminal and ground. If this tests ok, then replace the overload-relay kit. This is a common repair for me, and it is very rare for us to find a bad compressor, so you should be ok. If it is a bad compressor, and it is less than five years old, you have a five year sealed system warrantee, that will cover the repair cost. If it is over five years old, it is not worth repair. When you are done with the repair, make sure you install a 2000 joule or higher, surge protector to protect your refrigerator from this type of repair in the future. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists

The overload/start relay may have gone bad.
Other possible causes:
* Bad thermostat. Check thermostat
* Defrost timer. Not definite but possibly bad. Last resort.
*Concentrate on getting the compressor to run first.
Once the compressor runs again, observe the refrigerator for a while to confirm cooling.
If there is no cooling after at least forty five minutes, your refrigerant may leaked out.

Do not despair, get the compressor running first. The worst case scenario would be a burnt compressor, and that has not been established yet.

Bad overload relay or bad compressor. You can change your overload relay to test, usually fairly cheap, (55.00 from Sears) however if it is your compressor, it is out of it's five year warrantee and is not worth repair. 900 to 1100.00 to repair in my area.

Hi, If you changed relay, overload, & capacitor on the compressor and it still clicks on and off, the compressor has gone bad and will need replaced. Is this unit under five years old?

there is a thermal overload protector in the motor. After the motor cools it should restart. There is an off balance switch that might have been tripped when pulling out the comforter or when bailing out the water. As for the belts, tip the machine back and you will see the belts underneath the washer. Very easy to change and you'll see what I mean when you see the belts. That should solve your problem. AND DON'T OVERLOAD THE WASHER AGAIN.
