The most likely problem is the plastic cap in the print solenoid plunger is broken they are available but a little tricky to install. The soleniod is round and just inside the l. printer side frame.

I have a Canon StarWriter 30 that I bought ~1995. I rarely use it, and have kept it in mint condition. I just tried to type something, and found that it's not printing the full characters; it's cutting...

Check that the hammer is striking the letters squarely, that the daisy wheel is firmly located in its holder , Check too that the patten has not moved up in its location. Check that the ribbon can still transfer a deposit across its entire width. (Look back at a used part of the ribbon to see the strike pattern).

Nakajima ae-710 does not give a clear print. I suspect the striker pin. How do I lubricate it?

You should not have to lubricate the "striker"....type some characters then remove the ribbon cassette and see if the characters are spaced properly or are typing on top of each other on the carbon ribbon. You may have put the machine into a "multi-strike" mode....you can get a manual at www.nadist.com

Hello,

Hi

Many brother type writers have two cam assemblies under ribbon holder. One operates the print hammer and the other operates the correction ribbon lift. sometimes they gets stuck or lock themselves up. turning on and off a few times will take care of it, but sometimes it needs to be worked on by a tech. If you look when you type a character, most likely the print hammer is not firing or it is striking the correction ribbon instead of the black ribbon.

Let us know if you want to know something more else please accept the suggestion.

Thanks for contacting Fixya.com

Ribbon will not advance

mark the ribbon where it turns, where there is a pin of the typewriter passing through the ribbon, mark it with a white marker.
and type something, if it doesnt turn, you know the machine has a problem.
or try everytime pressing on the ribbon, if it works you know the ribbon is coming up, check if the correction ribbon is placed good.behind the correctable ribbon.

Typed characters are too light

Most Brother portables have a coded feature to change impression. Look for the word imp printed on one of the keytops, usually the I key<Hold down the code key and then depress the imp key to cjange the setting.

Brother CE-70 typewriter. Was typing perfectly well. Over about 15 characters the impact on the print head reduced to nil. Although printhead appears to strike the daisy wheel the character does not strike...

Make sure that the ribbon is moving. If characters are piling up in the same spot on the ribbon you will get this problem. Easiest fix is to replace the ribbon. Many brand new ribbons can have a problem. If this dosent solve the problem it may be a mechanical problem with the mechanism that drives the ribbon, requiring a technician to repair.

Characters fill in intermittently.

This is a common problem with old supplies stored in a humid environment. Try leaving ribbon in an air conditioned environment for a couple of days to see if it helps. Otherwise buy a new sealed ribbon to try. Also push the hammer buy hand and see if it moves in and out freely and quickly. If not, the hammer needs some lubricant and or adjusting.
