I have cleaned the glass - but it is actually happening doing it when I copy and when I print from it. It is only this tray that is causing a problem, all other trays print fine - so I am just wondering what else to try?

  • shuwray Oct 30, 2008

It happens both when I copy from the top, the glass and send a print and only to the 11x17 coming from that tray. It is a consistant group of smudges that are equal in size and apart from each other on one side...so it seems like something inside is smudging it on its way up from tray 4 ... to where it comes out and it is internal. hmmmm....it is near the edges but all the way up on one side about 4 big smudges. Does this sound right for the fix you are suggesting?

A bit difficult to diagnose without seeing this...

If it is happening when you print it is most likely an internal problem?

What sort of marks is it making?

    A thick smudge mark?

If the toner or Developer is dumping, this will cause smudge marks.

Open the paper tray and look to see if there is any black toner in there. Opening the cover where the toner is, there might be toner / developer dumping there.

Heat Rollers/ Fusing unit going bad, this can cause smudge marks, or double imaging...

Look at the fusing unit, are the rollers marked, scuffed, wrinkled or coating with toner.

Drum might have scratches on the outer edges.

Charge Unit might have a spec of dust on it; this will cause a line on the print.

Make a copy from the glass in the Portrait position and the Landscape position... one might have a mark the other might not. This would give the tech an idea where it is.

    How to fix this...

    After all the test above:

Take the machine apart and clean, vacuum it out...

(Use only a Vac with a micro filter, other wise the toner/developer might go every where)

Clean the charge, transfer, inside where the toner/developer unit is etc...

Clean the Optics. Possibly change the drum.

That is what I would do if I were in front of your machine...

I assume your not comfortable doing all this; I would suggest calling an authorized service tech.

Is this happening when You print a document, or copying from the glass or the document feeder?

I've seen this problem quite frequently if its the same thing. I've seen alot of times when running on 11 by 17 smudging through the print mostly near the corners. You may need to adjust the fuser roller speed and the vertical transport speed which is in level 2 of service software. If this sounds like your problem let me know and I can walk you through the adjustment.

Reading no paper paper tray is full

Instructions
  1. Check the display for an error message. If the display reads "Clearing paper from printer," the engine has detected a jam and is attempting to eject the jammed pages automatically. These pages will often be blank.
  2. Check the display for "Performing PRINT/STOP TEST" or "Performing SERVICE TEST." Either of these messages indicates that the printer is going through a test procedure that may eject blank pages.
  3. Reduce the amount of paper in the input tray if the printer is feeding multiple blank sheets at a time. The printer will pull extra pages through if the input tray is overfilled.
  4. Replace the paper in the input tray with the correct size if needed. If the 4600 printer detects the paper as an incorrect size for the print job, it may eject the paper without printing anything on it.
  5. Replace the ink cartridges if certain colors are blank on the page. Replace the black cartridge if printing a black text document that is coming out blank. The printer may attempt to print even if the ink level is low or empty, but will unable to print anything on the page, causing it to come out blank.
  6. Remove the sealing tape from newly installed cartridges. The tape covers the print heads and should be removed before installing the cartridges. If the tape is left on, it will prevent ink from getting on the pages as they print.
  7. Press the "Check mark" button on the control panel to enter the printer menu. Run a diagnostic so the printer can attempt to determine the cause of the blank pages printing. Press the up or down arrow to select "Diagnostics." Press the "Check mark" button. Press the "Down" arrow to highlight "PQ Troubleshooting." Press the "Check mark" button. The printer runs a diagnostic and returns to a ready state when done.

Poor print quality

if cartridge and drum did not solved this problem, this meant that problem lies with mirror or tracking system and repair that bits is usually beyond home user.

firstly try to check and clean all rollers and traction system, work from tray catcher up, follow paper trail and check for stuck hair, bit of paper or any other debries, clean all rollers. then follow paper procedure below:

as this is easy, create a page of white and black about 10mm lines and then print full page on 120g watercolour paper (this is bit grainy paper which will work as "scrub" of the system), this will remove if any, debris from transfer drum in most cases.

if these solution do not work, if you game, remove back, mark all wires where they go, then remove motherboard panel, mark mirror position, clean it up and this will solve the greyness problem, or kill the printer totally...

6-part NCr paper form being used. Pages 1 and 2

This is a problem with your paper. Using multi-part forms on an impact printer will get lighter print on each layer working from the top form to the bottom. The "carbon" paper has to impact the paper hard enough to make the marks. If your top and bottom copies look good but some in the middle are light it is a problem with the "carbon" paper and not the printer.
Now IF the top page is light and each copy under that is getting lighter then you need to close your platen gap (the lever on the right side of the machine mark A B C) go one click at a time (darkening) until the print quality looks good (or you go too far and it pinches the paper and jams *not good*)

HP P3005 - skid marks along paper's edge

Print 3 pages. Use the manual feed tray. As they print, open the cover, remove the toner and look down at the paper in the printer. Do you see marks along the edge? If no...replace the fuser. If yes...it could be the transfer roller.

Flashing triangular light with the exclamation mark inside it.

Clear the printer queue on the computer (double-click the printer icon in the tray or in the Printers and Faxes folder and cancel all documents listed). Then power off the printer and disconnect the power - remove the paper from the paper tray until you have the printer memory cleared as to not waste paper.

Page prints half page then jams

I suggest you get a sheet of Card Stock (Heavy paper) and place it in the feed way. Then press the print button applying a slight amount of pressure on the Card Stock so it will feed throught the printer. The reason for this, in some cases I have been able to clear the paper track of debris that was deposited there over time. Worth a try. I have fixed a number of printers this way saving costly repairs. Bud

Smudge marks on paper; otherwise normal

fuser is usually replaced as a assembly, it's the hot bit a back.

Can only be two things the drum or the fuser as our headstrong friend has correctly explained.

More than likely it is the drum they last about 4 toners i think.

Learn the art of getting a page to stop halfway threw printing, you want to stop the page after the drum has put a image on the paper but before paper has gone threw the fuser (hotbit).

Once you have mastered the position correctly by stopping the printing by opening the door and removing drum/toner cartridge, to reveal the paper that is printed but can be rubbed off, we will know if marks are coming from the drum (you will see them) or from the fuser, if print is fine
