Question about Garden
I have a 2000 Poulan Pro lawn tractor with the 18.5 Twin V Intek Briggs engine and last weekend it blew the 15 amp fuse. I replace the fuse and it will start the mower and I can use it for some time... but after I shut it down and attempt to restart it, it blows the fuse after the engine starts to run (5-10 seconds). I have looked for any shorts but have not found any... and that should cause the fuse to go immediately anyway. I replaced the seat switch and ignition (matching parts from a like unit) but the same thing happens. I do not know how to diagnose if the voltage regulator could cause this? Thoughts?
Put a volt meter on the battery when running. Shouldn't be higher than 14.5 or so. if so, it's overcharging. If you checked for shorts, did you run a continuity (ohm) test with a meter to see if the fuse is going to ground in anyway....do this. Disconnect battery completely, ground cable first. With fuse removed check each direction of fuse wires. If getting an indication of going to ground, unplug ignition switch. still grounding? check starter solenoid with ohm meter for grounding. With wires disconnected, check between battery side of solenoid and body of solenoid where it mounts, or a good chassis ground. (you might check that the solenoid mount is grounding to the chassis first) Then between the starter side. And the small connector from the ignition switch. It should not be going to ground at all. The ignition switch sends the ignition to ground to stop the engine, and the safety switches go to ground to prevent starting when in improper position. One of these switches could be faulty as they also allow voltage for ignition through when in proper position. Check switches. If two blade, it should open or close when operated. If 4 blade, one side is open, the other is closed when operated. With ohm or continuity meter, connect to two blades on 4 blade switch and see if they connect. Push button and see if there's a change. Try the other two blades. You should see a change on both, but different. Again, two of the blades (connectors) will see each other, two will not when button pushed. Same on two blade switch. Either open (see each other) or closed when button depressed. If not, bad switch. Some of these riders came with a 30 amp fuse, by the way..... 4x4papa
