On the ipod touch the itunes icon comes out and their is a usb cable with an arow pointing to the itunes icon. I plug it into i tunes and a message comes out saying that Itouch is locked and must be unlocked first. BUT I CANT GET TO THE KEYS to unlocke it because the icon with the arrow re-apears.
Make sure you're USB is unplugged. when you're at the screen with the itunes symbol and the usb arrow, hold down the home and sleep button until the screen goes black, at this point, keep holding for another 10 seconds. at this point your screen should look black as if the ipod is off. connect to the computer and itunes shoulds show a message like "itunes has just discovered an ipod in recovery mode" you'll be able to do a restore and regain use of your touch.

really need help ive tried everything including this and it doesnt work at all. after i hold it for another 10 it just goes right back to the usb itunes thing and when i plug it in nothing at all happens. a bubble does pop up saying (one of the usb devices attached to this comp has malfunctioned, and windows does not recongnize it. for aassistance in solving this problem, click here.) and even when i tried the trouble shooting i couldnt figure it out. HELP!

Solution 8 is the way.........my ipod was stuck with the 3 symbols that every 1 is talkin about , when the ipod is on , hold down the power button and the home button , ignore the slide bar that tell you to power off , hold for about 20 seconds , in the bottom right of your screen , its says intializing device , i tunes then opens up on its own and tell u that its decovered the ipod in recovery and promps you to restore ........i am gutted about that as im on a new laptop and i have nothing on it at all , all my music is now lost and have to start from scratch , at least it seems to b workin now .....

I did it a little differently and it worked for me. Do not open itunes, leave the itouch plugged in and then press the home and sleep key for about 20 seconds then while it is booting, itunes load and takes you to the restore process.

Okay, let me simplify your life. There's fine print somewhere and it would be wise to read it. I didn't and it cost me days, really weeks before learning what the problem is. Here goes: Before agreeing to upgrade your itouch to a newer version be forewarned that backup does not include your precious notepad. At least, I haven't found it if it does. But do not, I repeat do not try to upgrade on a computer that does not have a 2.0 usb port. You're setting yourself up for disaster if you do. Also, the newer the computer, the better your chances of having the proper drivers to update or install. This problem really simmers down to outdated drivers and usb ports. Best wishes. Good luck. My ipod touch 2nd generation is second hand , my itunes will not recognize it. i was thinking of installing iTunES version 8,, but cant find a valid file ,,,so i decided to click SETTINGS then general then erase all COntent and settings,, since 4 pm today i got stuck in the itunes icon with the USB icon pointing towards it, :( I do not know what to do anymore,, those silly apple troubleshooting dont work, i already did the reinstallation of itunes. checking device manager, usb ports, putting a check on the box beside Automatically detect settings in internet options,, non worked..

My ipod has the same symbols but when i reset it by pressing the home and sleep buttons it doesnt change but it comes up recovery mode. it then says:
1) locate and install driver software(recommended)
2) ask me again later
3) dont show this message again for the device
..so i click 1 then click continue, then it tells me to insert a disc, which i dont have? so i click i dont have the disk, show me other options. then it comes up:
1)check for a solution
2)browse my computer for driver software(advanced)
..but for me neither work.
