After a few months, the unit stopped reading dvds. I receive the following errors - "no disc" or "unknown disc" I have already set the player to be a region free player, but unit still does not read any dvds.
Get into the Service Menu by entering 1397139 on the remote control like you did before and restore the original factory-set values stored in flash-memory back the way they were. One you do this your unit will function properly again. firstname.lastname@example.org

Ive only had mine for 2 months and it just stopped playing dvds all together. I had a brand new dvd playing, went to switch it to another new dvd movie and it wouldnt read it or any other dvd Ive tried. I havent tried a blu ray disc yet.
I also have this annoying problem - but I bought mine new on ebay and have zero after-sales support. I have tried all the hacks I cna find over the last 12 months and when I am finished, the messages all say 'congratulations, you're now region free'. But even the local DVDs don't work. Disc ejects itself with irritating message 'unknown disc'. Does anyone have this problem who has a SALES RECEIPT from an authorised LG dealer? If so, can you jump up and down with LG until they offer a solution? Thanks!
Reset you player by doing the following:
With the player on, hooked properly to your television, and on the correct station:
Open the tray
Close the tray (with no DVD inserted)
Hold the stop button down for a full 5 seconds
The CyberHome screen should appear. You should be able to play your dvd's now.
There are several things you can do to try and solve your problem:
Make sure that the DVDs you try to play are encoded for the right region.
Make sure that the transportation lock (usually a plastic screw on the bottom of the unit), is not engaged.
Turn off player with disc inserted, unplug temporarily from wall outlet, plug back in and turn back on.
