With a G.E. 3 device remote control (model #24991), $6.99 at Target, I pressed the setup & menu buttons together and got the T.V.'s menu. I selected option #5 (i.e. channel setup); the T.V. scanned the channels available from my cable feed and my unit was became fully functional.

Nope, Im sorry but you are going to need the original remote. You can get one at http://www.remotes.com or check with ba friend or famiely member to see if they have one you can borrow. Also check with a local retailer, explain the problem, maybe they will let you borrow one of thier remotes?
