Question about HP Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have an hp a6220a computer and am finding the memory rather small for DVD recording. The present memory is 160Gb and am looking to increase it as well as possible the RAM which is at present 1Gb. What does HP have available for upgrading and what would be the cost? Robin Firth. Adelaide Australia.

Thank you for your response. I obtained the services of a consultant who upgraded the RAM and then provided a 350GB HD Sata, but when we opened up the computer, the other Sata connection was in use for the DVD burner. The consultant has taken it away to change it for an eide for which there is a connection, and he is going to upgrade it to 500GB

Hi,     The most memory that your system can hold is 2 GB. It has 2 slots on your motherboard so you really just need to buy one Chip of 1 GB of Ram. This Ram is fairly cheap, you can get it on the Internet for about between $20 to  $30 Dollars. ( Here is link for that price)  http://www.kahlon.com/result.asp?modelid=637118 For your Hard Drive, prices are set for the amount of Storage that you need.  You could get a 500 GB for under $70.00       Just be sure that you get a ( Sata 3G ) hard drive and not an ( eide ) or a scsi.

There is a small capacitor on the power supply board, if memory serves me it is 220uf cap at 16 volts or higher, increase value to 470uf with a higher voltage rating. once the part is replaced the machine will function.

My HP XW4600 does not power up to boot though the fans are blowing at full power. HP certified techs replaced the board twice. What else could it be?

First, be sure the monitor is connected, and powered. Sounds stupid, but I have had the problem.
Next, When you start it, do you hear one beep while the boot process is going on?. If no, the problem sounds like the motherboard. Are you comfortable taking the side off? We will be looking for any lit leds.

This being my first time, I am not sure of the protocol, But, give me
a little slack. I wil look in my service files for information on that
model.

Nothing to do with your problem, but you need to increase the memory to at at least 2Gb if you are running XP.

Let know what more info you can give me. Any thing abnormal helps.

Memory is too low to play downloads. I have no sound either.

Two separate issues. Do you mean you don't have enough system memory? Look up the system requirements for the game your trying to play. You did not list what OS your using. If its XP, try increasing the Virtual Memory. You do this by right clicking on "My Computer" Go to "Advanced" In the "Performance Options" click on "Advanced" There you can increase your Virtual Memory. Also check and clean out your "Startup" by clicking on "Start" then "Run" Then type in the word msconfig
Then click ok. Go to the "Statup" tab and clean out what you do not need.

The temp folder where the image is stored on your hard drive is small. You might want to look at what else is in that temp folder, check your hard drive size as well, and maybe increase memory.

DVD DRIVE WORKS, BUT CD DRIVE DEAD

Try using the manual eject that is as small as a pinhole just below or beside the CD drive. Once you find out that you can manually eject you may be able to insert a cleaning cd to clean the device.

If that doesn't work check device manager to see if it has the proper driver or if it's recognized that it's installed in the system.

DVD freezing

I have had the freezing problem on Sony, Insignia, Cyberhome, HP computer DVD drives, etc.
Based upon very numerous incidents (believe me, I mean hundreds) the problem occurs most frequently after about the first hour as the track moves outward from the hub (and velocity per 360 degree turning increases).(Recording is from the hub out, not from the outer edge in towards the hub). An engineer suggested that the increasing velocity creates the greater possibility of the reader "missing" a data fragment which, in turn, "freezes" the image presently in the buffer. It may "recover"
and move data along again but will probably "freeze" again.
The following definitely helps but does not always work:: Keep the track "tight" by recording actual
running time NOT longer than 30% of the maximum capacity
permitted by the selected speed. Example: On a Sony RDR GX7, I record not more than 60 mins actual time at LP speed
which, on this machine, permits a maximum capacity of 180 minutes using LP. Based on literally hundreds of DVD recordings, I can say positively that the above approach HELPS
limit the problem but it DOES NOT totally eliminate it.
I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM OTHERS, PARTICULARLY PROS, WHO HAVE INFORMATION ON THIS SUBJECT. Even reduced, the problem is irritting.
