Question about Ulead Videostudio 8 for PC

1 Answer

Video capturing Hi, I've just installed a firewire to capture video and it does not work. My camera's manual says I should see a DV indicator mode on my camera's LCD screen when capturing video and this I do not see. Also, I get a memory error when trying to capture video but my computer has more than what my camera recommends for RAM. I don't know what to do. The cable seems to have been installed correctly as confirmed by Window's device manager, and when plugged into the camera, Ulead recognizes the brand of my camera. I'm stumped...Thanks for any help!

You might need a specific driver for this camera. Do you know if you've installed a driver specific for this camera?

Connect JVC GR-D240ek to vista laptop

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A firewire to USB will not work. It has to be firewire to firewire. A JVC GR-D240ek uses 4-pin, IEEE 1394 compliant Digital Video Connector [DV OUT] to connect a 1394 cable (also known as a FireWire or i.Link cable) to a laptop equipped with an equivalent IEEE 1394 port. Please note that some laptops firewire port could either be 4 pins or 6 pins.
Soon as that connection as shown above is established, you can use Windows Import Video to capture / download the videos.

Other notes (from the same Windows Help link above) :
  • You can also open Windows Import Video by using Windows Movie Maker. After you connect ... your DV camera, and your computer, start Windows Movie Maker, turn on your DV camera, put it into playback mode, and Windows Import Video should open automatically.
  • You can also open Windows Import Video by using Windows Photo Gallery. After you connect ...your DV camera, and your computer, start Windows Photo Gallery, turn on your DV camera, and put it into playback mode. In Windows Photo Gallery, click File, click Import from Camera or Scanner, click your DV camera in the list of devices, click Import, and then follow the instructions.
  • You can also open Windows Import Video by using Windows Live Photo Gallery. (This options requires you to install Windows Live on your computer.) After you connect your...your DV camera, and your computer, start Windows Live Photo Gallery, turn on your DV camera, and put it into playback mode. In Windows Live Photo Gallery, click File, click Import from a camera or scanner, click your DV camera in the list of devices, click Import, and then follow the instructions.
Verify that the laptop's firewire port is 100% up to specs and totally compliant to IEEE 1394.

God luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Capturing video

I had to get a Firewire cable to make this cam work with Vista. I was told Firewire is faster (?) and much better video quality because it is made for loads of data. I can't tell any much of difference from USB, but it does work with Firewire. So, basically try a Firewire cable.

Vista and firewire 1394?

Firewire works fine under Vista, but it's quite possible your USB to Firewire bridge doesn't have proper Vista drivers. You wouldn't expect Vista to include these, they would be installed from a disc that came with your adaptor. USB to Firewire is a questionable option at best... there are often problems with it. You may be better off with a PC-Card or ExpressCard solution, if the laptop is your only computer.

Also, when the camera says "DV IN", it's expecting video from the PC to be sent to it, it's not in capture mode. Most camcorders must be in either "play" mode, or a special "link to PC" mode in order to even be recognized by Windows (any version) as a video input device.

However, until you resolve the issue of supporting your Firewire device in Vista, nothing the camcorder does will be an issue yet. You should check the documentation that came with your USB to Firewire device, the driver disc, etc. for information on Vista support.

Unable to tansfer video to computer using DV cable..

Pinnacle software will recognize the camera installed through a firewire cable once the camera is turned on. Windows movies software doesn't recognize DV cameras. You may be able to get capture to work if you go to and download the Windows Media 9.0 Development Kit. I believe DV input is a capture option.

There has to be a 3rd party program installed to get it to recognize it.

Good luck on that.

Problem capturing footage from Canon MV700 DV camcorder to Windows XP

I use Pinnacle Studio versions 9 and 10 without any problems. The software sees the camera MV700i and controlls the playback etc. Have also used Ulead Movie Factory without any problems, but its a little harder when it comes to editing the output.
