Question about GE Profile PSW26P Stainless Steel Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

My GE Profile makes ice but then the ice cubes melt!

I have a GE Profile and recently we noticed some over freezing where frozen goods would get very frosty on the outside. Then we started getting icicles forming under the ice bin. The ice maker definitely makes ice. I've seen a full bin before. The ice then melts over time and refreezes elsewhere in the freezer. Very odd.

Any advice?

Interesting solution. I just fried a computer motherboard and it was plugged into the same circuit. I wonder if I got a power surge or something recently since they've both gone down around the same time. Thanks for the help. I'll try that! :)

Sometimes ice melts in ice maker. Water drips down and refreezes.

There is a heater built into the ice maker bottom to help release ice cubes from the machine. Under normal conditions the heater only come on when the ice maker starts to run and then jambs against the frozen cubes. When it stalls and jambs against the frozen ice cubes, the heater comes on to melt the cubes enough. I think you have a defective ice maker and the heater is coming on to much or at the wrong time, Since your temps go back to normal with the ice maker turned off, I am almost sure thats your problem.

Could be several problems (I'm a homeowner, not an expert). GE had a problem with the water line in the freezer door: not enuf insulation so the line freezes, hence no water flow. I would look at this first, especially if you press the water dispenser handle and you hear the pump, but no water comes out. Ditto if the ice bin is empty or the ice maker isn't making any more ice. If the icemaker is making ice but not dispensing it, then the auger (thing that agitates the ice cubes in the bin) may be broken or frozen. (if frozen be sure ice cubes in bin are loose and not frozen into one big ice cube).

The ice maker is basically frozen. There are two fixes for this condition. If you can transfer all of the food out to another appliance you can unplug and open the doors and let it completely defrost on its own.

the other method is to use a blow dryer. When you have completely defrosted the ice maker and thoroughly dryed it spray the ice cube tray with pam cooking spray which will act as a lubricant. When you are ready to make ice again expect the ice maker to take about 24 hours before the first batch of ice cubes are ejected.

Empty all ice from the bin and from the "Drill" like Ice shaper spinning unit. Let the unit make some new ice and see if that works.

One of your experts Dave, helped me determine it was the sensor that gives input to the motherboard telling it when to defrost. I believe it is called a thermosister.
