"Machine Error 81" message when I tried to set up my 1950 MC

My Brother MFC 1950MC has been inactive for a few years. I tried to set it up today and begin using it again. I got the "Machine Error 81" message. I sure hope it's resolvable.

Thank you,

Jay Squires

This may cost me another ten-spot, because that problem is corrected and a new one arisen. When I use the copy function only the left side of the page prints. When someone faxed something to me only the right side printed. Let me know if I need to pay another $10 for your answer. thanks.

I might understand getting a new printer when only the right half prints when using the copy function and the left half when receiving a fax, but -- and this is going to sound stupid -- are you assuming the printer is separate from the fax? If it is part of the fax machine, as mine is, wouldn't I have to get a whole new fax machine???? Thanks again, Guru.

I didn't get my last question answered (which I put under comments instead of a new post, the latter of which implied that I wanted a different expert). Anyway the answer I got was a repeat of the previous one. Here is my unanswered question which I'm pasting here:

Helpful -- disappointing, but helpful! I know I need to get a new fax machine, since parts would cost more than a new printer. What was not adequately explained to me is "What is the difference between the printer and the fax machine itself?" You told me an HP printer was good. So... how do I get a fax that is sent to a "Brother" print on an HP? Am I the only one having trouble visualizing this?

Try reinstalling the driver. That usually resolves these kind of errors, where only a part of the page gets printed.

Well if the printer and the fax machine are connected, it woulb be hard to replace the fax machine without replacing the printing part. And that will not solve the problem. It seems as though your internal memory only remembers half of what is supposed to be printed. The internal memory may have gotten cluttered after the few years it had been sitting. If possible, try resseting it if there is a button for it and if not or it doesn't work, try restoring the factory settings using the menu button. That should work.

"When I use the copy function only the left side of the page prints"

That is because toner is not melting properly.

Remove toner cartridge, put it back in place and print like ten pages or so, if this cannot fix the problem, then there is a problem with the drum or with the fuser unit.

This error message is telling us that there's a some hardware error/failure already on your printer and it will need some part replacement , but the price of the repair plus part replacement is equal as getteing a unit , so I suggest you just go ahead and get a new unit ....

Basically this error is one that will cost more to fix than to get a new printer. As you would need to replace parts that aren't sold separately, the only thing you can do to try to fix it is unplug it and replug it in and hope that it goes away. If it is still under warranty, then get it fixed, otherwise look for a new printer. HP printers are very reliable

email brother and they will tell you the same thing

good luck and let me know if you have any further questions regarding this

I'm sorry if I didn't respond sooner, I am very busy, as I believe you are and had other items to attend to, but with the new info, it is definitely in your interest to get a new printer if the fax is failing. Sounds like the computer on this is bad and so everything is going bad.

I'm sorry if I didn't spell out the exact wording of th manual saying that any error that doesn't reset when unplugged and replugged requires service like findmeifyoucan but The reason I said you are better off with a new printer is basically because this one is done, and I recommend an hp printer because you can buy one (an all-in-one) with a fax, copy, print, and scan (black and/or color) and they generally outlast other brands I believe from what I have seen. The expensive part of all printers is the ink and so unless it is a simple and quick fix, look for a new printer. Please don't feel the need to fork out another $10 but Please let me know if you need anything else and I would appreciate it if you took the time to re-rate my solution as a solution rated as "Fixya" is well worth the time I put in.

Machine Error XX indicates a mechanical malfunction of the FAX/DCP/MFC. "XX" represents the error number. Unplug the unit from the power source and then plug it back in.

Its a internal problem, have you already contacted Brother about the issue?

no not another $10 for the answer.

its simple the problem is that your cartridge is near to end.so it should be refilled or replaced with new.as u said you started using out you printer after few years.may be your cartridge must be full but the powder inside your cartridge has gone moist and needs to be replaced.

now your printer is having no problem.only the cartridge is empty or gone moist.get your cartridge refilled or replace it with new.

rate the solution if helped by it.

    feel free for further assistance.

    thanks.

How do i turn the unit on?

Simply plugging it the cord into an active electrical outlet will do the trick. There's no rocker switch on the back.

The MFCs tend to go into a power-saving mode where they are silent.

Look for signs of life on the tiny LCD screen.

If this doesn't answer your question, then follow this link to the Brother MFC 1850/ 1950 MC/ 1950 MC PLUS printer manual.

Cannot get dial tone on phone

I would suggest unplugging the unit and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Make sure there are no paper jams, and then plug it back in and turn it on. Also, check the phone line with another phone instrument.
Make sure to put the phone wire back in the right port.

Plug in and power the unit back on and test it.

If it is still failing, then I am sorry to say that it might be time to get a new unit.

MFC 210c Unable to Print Use Troubleshouting and routine maintenance chapter in Users Manual

My color has not worked well in the past few months. Now I get the message Unable to Print, Use Troubleshooting and rountine maintenance chapter in user's manual. I've tried everything it told me. I've removed all ink cartridges and left them upright (they are ALL brand new) and cleaned all the ink ports. I've cleaned the machine several times. It's told me there's no ink cartrige, I've replaced them, turned the machine off and on, unlplugged, etc. Then go to print and I get the same message again and it won't print. The machine is almost 2 years old and has worked fine until about 6 months ago when the magenta stopped working all together. Now this. Any help? Thanks.

Sounds like print heads are fried. I found this guys website ebay@laseractionplus.com he says he has lots of brother parts and his rating is good. Otherwise you might have an auction of your own to sell your PC101 carts. As far as your Ebay problem, that's why they have a dispute department and feedback. Good luck
