Question about Canon Rebel XT / EOS 350D Digital Camera

CF Card Err

I took phots with camera, took out CF card and had photos processed. When I tried to put CF card back into camera, I get a CF Err message. I went to Radio Shack and tried a new CF card but I get the same CF Err Message. What should I do?

Sounds like you have bent pins on your CF reader. Open the door, take out the card and look inside. Is there damage to the pins?

You maybe able to fix it with pincers and a needle just align the pin or pins that are out of place, i did this and it worked for me and now my camera is working fine. and for free.

Hi

Sounds like you have bent pins on your CF reader. Open the door, take out the card and look inside. Is there damage to the pins? If so you need to replace the CF reader.

If you can solder really really well you can replace it yourself, we have the part available in our store (Google: Darntoothysam) Im sure Canon will want $200+ for the repair, and we are not currently offering to do the repair for customers, sorry.

Error 99 keeps coming up I reload the battery turn on off but after a few shots it comes up again and the red shows indicating that it is still processing the shot.


Here is the diagnostic process, allegedly from Canon themselves. It's quite old, a newer camera probably has a SD card rather than CF.

To isolate the cause of the issue, we [Canon] suggest that you do the following:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the "ERR 99" message appear? If it does, then the camera should be serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.

I took my CF card out to get photos, went to put it back in and the screen read "There is a problem with CF card. Replace the CF card." I didn't think there was a problem with the card. But I replaced...


Your CF pins in the camera are most likely bent/broken. This is a very common problem. Most repair shops will charge $150-$200 to repair this.

ERR 99


Err 99 usually means your lens contacts are dirty either on the lens itself or on the camera.

To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, the camera may be faulty and requires a service. If it does not, then: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99" message appear? If so, then the CF card is faulty. Try a different card. If the message does not appear: -
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the gold contacts on the lens by GENTLY rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Keeping the camera face pointing down, also clean the gold contacts on the camera, being careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99" message only appears when one particular lens is attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.

Not all CF cards are created equally, so yes, it could be your batch of cards. To determine if the error is CF related, and not anything else, try the following steps which are used to diagnose err 99's

To isolate the cause of the issue, do the following: -

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert only a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Cf card


I got annoyed with this happening to cheapo cards which I bought from Klick cameras. They took the card in, got it serviced, and sent it back. I still got problems, however, and decided to cut my losses and bought two new 8gb cards via ebay. They are made by samsung, and come with a very plain label without the name Samsung on them. You can buy one for about £27. I use two, and they have not let me down after hundreds of using. I don't take them out of the camera to read, but use the lead supplied to connect to the computer, as I find that the pins are delicate in the camera, and have found that one snapped off even when I was careful putting it back in. I just reformat each time still in the camera. I still think it is cheap, as I used to pay £3 for a film, and £6 to process when we used film, and now we can re-use the card many times - I took about 1000 shots over the last few days, so that has paid for the cost of the card anyway.
