Camera does not turn on?!?!

Hi there, I just bought this camera Umax AstraPix 430... took a few photos and after a while the camera refused to switch on. When I tried to connect it to the pc it won't respond at all and all i get is a message saying that "the camera is not connected to the pc" when in fact it is. I guess that only if i replace the batteries the camera will switch on but in that case I'll lose ALL the photos!!!
Can anyone help??!!

ApprenticeI presume you aren't using a memory card - because if you are, the pics shouldn't vanish when you change the batteries.
