Setting up a router can be overwhelming sometimes. There are alot of pages on the setup screen that (for basic configuations) you just don't need to concern yourself with.
If you have already tried to set up the router yourself with no luck press and hold the reset button on the back of the router for 25 seconds to reset the router to factory defaults.(resetting the router is with it plugged into power)

Make sure your router is unplugged from power before you start.

1-Modem is powered up and running
2-disconnect ethernet cable from back of computer to INTERNET on the back of the router.
3-Connect the extra ethernet cable from ANY of the 1,2,3,4 ports, then connect the other end to your computer.
4-Power up router and don't do anything for about 5 min.
5-Open your browser (Internet Explorer) and type in the address (192.168.1.1)and press enter
6-It will ask you for a user and password User=Admin, password=password. You should be in the routers setup page.
7-Click on wireless security settings
8-Network name(will be default as the router model #) Change that to your last name to recognise it later.
9-Click on WEP and then click on generate key
10-WRITE DOWN YOUR KEY PERFECTLY(very important)
11-Save Changes and close browser
12-on your wireless machine click on"view wireless networks" you should see your last name.
13-Click on you name and click connect/then it will ask you for your wep password (a very long password) enter that password and click "save password" also "save network"

And you should be ok. I have had Linksys router be bad out of the box. In my opinon Netgear or Dlink would be a better option.

Any other wireless laptops or wireless recievers that you might have to add to the network you will have to have them search for the network and enter you wep key and save on each machine.

Good luck i hope that helps

Possible reason why you lost the connection with your DSL line is that the router's configuration was changed. To reconfigure your Linksys router, you need to connect your computer wired to the router.
Open a Web Browser (IE, Firefox etc.) on the wired computer and type http://192.168.1.1 and press Enter. On the Username box leave it blank and on the password box type in admin. You will then see the router's configuration page. Under the Basic Setup tab you will see Internet Connection type on the left side of the screen. Click on the down arrow button and select PPoE, type in the Username and password that was provided by your DSL Internet service provider. Once your done click on the Save setting button on the bottom of the screen. Click on the Status tab on the top of the screen. Click on the Connect button and check if you will have an IP address on the Internet IP address option. If a valid IP address is present then you should have an internet connection then.

How to Configure Belkin routers without installation CD for Centurylink, Embarq, Bell sympatico, Bell Canada ISPs ?
Configuring Belkin routers without installation CD for Centurylink, Embarq, Bell sympatico, Bell Canada ISPs :
  • Connect the Computer to the Router in one of the 4 ports named wired (usually grey in color) using an Ethernet cable.
  • Do not connect the modem to the router.
  • Open internet explorer / Firefox / chrome or any of your default web browser.
  • In the address bar type the default gateway address of Belkin router i.e., 192.168.2.1
  • Belkin router setup page (RSP) will be displayed.
f7dd033.jpg
Wired Part Configuration:
We need to configure the wired part by following these steps.
Step 1: You need to LOGIN to the router for making any changes. (No login password, just leave it blank and click SUBMIT)
Step 2: Click on LAN settings (found on left side of RSP), change the IP address from 192.168.2.1 to 192.168.40.1 and save changes.
Step 3: Now Connect the DSL Modem to Router in the port named Modem (usually yellow in color) using another Ethernet cable.
***Once you are done that, you need to re-login to RSP by typing the new IP address 192.168.40.1 in the address bar of web browser.

Step 4: Check for the internet status at the top right hand corner of RSP. If it is connected then the wired part is working perfect with the router (wired computers will go online). Need not follow the steps below, directly jump to wireless part configuration.
Step 5: If the Internet Status is not connected then, click on CONNECTION TYPE (found on left side of RSP), it has to be selected as DYNAMIC and click next. It will ask for HOST NAME, leave it blank or you can type anything there and click on APPLY CHANGES.
Step 6: Now check for the internet status at the top right hand corner of belkin RSP. If it says connected then everything for the wired part is configured perfectly. You can go ahead and configure for the wireless part.
If it is not connected then we need to do a network power cycle.

Steps to be followed for performing Network power cycle:
  • Unplug the power cable of both your modem and router.
  • Wait for 30 seconds.
  • Plug back the power cable of the modem and wait until all the lights are lit up in it.
  • Now plug back the power cable to the router and check for the lights in the router.
Modem & Internet lights will be lit and they will be solid (blue/green) in the router; it says that the Internet status is connected. Now you will be able to go online in the wired computers.

If still Modem & Internet lights are not solid in the router; it may be blinking in red/ amber it says that the Internet status is not connected. You will not be able to go online in the wired computers.

In this case you need to connect your computer directly to the modem and check whether you are able to go online. If you are not able to go online, then you need to contact your ISP and fix your issue with internet.

The above method is applicable only for Embarq, century link, Bell Sympatico, Bell Canada ISPs. Because these ISPs will have the IP address same as Belkin routers....

If nothing works then you need to contact your ISP and ask them to bridge the modem...Bridging the modem disables NAT in the modem and allows you to get a public IP in the modem.

Belkin router with a laptop

1. First you need to configure your router with your laptop wired or physically connected to it.
2. Connect your modem to router's WAN/Internet port. Then your laptop will be connected to the one of the router's Ethernet port using an RJ45 or Ethernet cable.
3. You may run the setup cd that came with the router. Configure it with the Internet connection type that Bell Sympatico requires.
4. The setup cd will also require you to set up wireless in the router. Once it is done, disconnect your computer from the router.
5. Enable wifi in your laptop and select the wireless network that you set up and connect to it.

Power off then power on both the internet service providers modem and your router, if the DSL does not link up through the modem to your router. You will need to reestabilish the PPPOE internet connection to your service provider, this can be done on the router or the PC. BPCS

Connection to internet doesnt work

Your ISP has specific requirements for connecting a router to their equipment. For some the default router settings connect successfully. Some Telcos require PPPoE logins to access the network, you may either be given a static IP address or be required to accept a dynamic IP address. You need to determine from your ISP often from a help website, a chat with a technician or phone support what those requirements are. Another possibility is failure to include DNS addresses either in the router or in the network adapter's IP configuration.

Sympatico

  1. Start your network in this order:
    1. Turn the modem power off.
    2. Turn the router power off.
    3. Turn the modem power back on. Wait two minutes until the lights are stable.
    4. Turn the router power back on. Wait one minute until the lights are stable.
    5. Turn the computer power back on.
  2. Open an Internet browser, and type http://192.168.0.1. If a "Configuration Assistant" appears immediately, then do not follow the rest of these instructions. Follow the Configuration Assistant instructions, instead. Once you are finished, test your Internet connection by browing online, for example to http://kbserver.netgear.com.
  3. Type admin for User Name, and password for Password. (Older routers use 1234 as the password.)
  4. Click OK. This logs you into the router
  5. Click Setup Wizard on the top left corner, Select Yes for the Setup Wizard to detect the type of internet connection and click Next.
  6. The Setup Wizard will detect the type of Internet connection. DSL connections which require a login to connect to the internet will be detected as PPPoE. Click Next
  7. Configure your router with the username and password provided by your ISP and click Apply.
  8. The router will now save these settings. When complete, you can verify whether you are connected to the internet from the Router Status > Maintenance menu.
  9. Verify you have a valid IP address (not-blank / 0.0.0.0) on the Internet Port assigned by your ISP
  10. check if you are able to go online wired..
  11. to setup wireless
  12. Click Wireless Settings under Setup menu.
  13. Under Security Options, Select WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
  14. Select Authentication type as Automatic and Encryption Strength as 64-bit (or 128-bit) - You must later configure your wireless computers with the same setting.
  15. Select Key 1 and enter any 10 hexadecimal digits - any combination of 0-9, A-F (26 digits if you selected 128-bit as the encryption strength) and Apply the settings. Please note down these values - You must later configure your wireless computers with the same setting.
  16. then check in your w/ls laptop, you would find your w/ls n/w name , try connect to it, enter your key , you would get connected

Sympatico & DLink DI-704P

It usually is simple, and hopefully the answer is as well. If you haven?t already done so unplug the modem and the router. Wait for a few seconds and then plug the modem in followed by the router. Reboot your PC and try the Internet again. If it still doesn?t work then I would try doing a hard reset of your router and reconfigure using the setup process outlined by the manufacturer. If that still doesn?t work let us know and we?ll continue ?.
