My PC have 768MB Ram, and there are 34 processes running including TuneUp memory optimizer.
I will try anyway the selective startup. How about the case of it hangs when not in use for about 1hour1. Thanks for the suggestion.

Download and run ATF Cleaner from its free , it clears all your temp folders at once , making your virus and spyware programs run better. does not touch any system files and is extremely fast and easy to use. always run it more than once or untill you get a "no files removed" message. I run it everytime i finish browsing..
Make sure you have all the updates your operating system, virus and spyware update programs running will tie up your computer when you are browsing.
Make sure you run Microsofts' malicious software removal tool found in thier update section.
Post your findings here if this doesnt clear it up for you and ill post a few more steps.

more than likely you have your computer resources tied up and the computer isnt keeping up. if you hit control-alt-delete and open the taskmanager to the processes tab, look at the bottom to see how many processes you have running. windows only requires about 20 processes with your antivirus program included.

Most ppl use all the default settings when installing a program , which usually sets things like ms office, yahoo, limewire, msn, AOL to start when windows starts. This is ok when you have a SUPER computer , but when your running XP or Vista and only have 512 meg of RAM and windows is eating up 200 meg, your video card another 128 meg, then those programs are eating the remainder, you have nothing left when you actually start surfing the net, so the hangs begin.

this could also be a virus...but i dont see why it would manifest itself only while your downloading. I would update and run your antivirus software also.

Go into the preferences/settings of each program running down by your clock and set them not to start when windows starts.

go to your startup folder (START-ALL PROGRAMS-STARTUP) and del and entries here -this will not delete the programs , only keep the shortcuts from starting the programs when windows starts.

you can also click START - RUN - type in MSCONFIG , this open the system config utility, if you go to the tab at the top marked "startup" and uncheck all the boxes in front of everything except your printer, virus scanner, and video card. this will keep these background programs from running at startup. reboot and click OK when it restarts to get past the message stating youve chnged the way windows starts.

hope this helps ya a lil more..

I am sorry but the only way to solve your problem with your desktop is to download a new cd from the internet. Burn your CD Software that you downloaded from the internet then reboot your desktop with the CD software that you burned and the format session will begin. Good luck!

So I just got a Dell Optiplex sx280 that runs windows xp and can't connect it to the wireless internet at my house. The built-in driver is a Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller, and I don't...

Desktop computers do not usually have a wireless card installed. They will have a built-in LAN card that uses a LAN cable.
If you want to connect your computer using a wireless connection then you will need to install a wireless card in your computer and configure it to communicate with your wireless router.
Otherwise you can connect to your wireless router using a LAN cable.
Your wireless router may have built-in LAN ports and you can connect your computer to the wireless router using a network cable.

My PC will reboot automatically when I am in the middle of reading email, working on pictures or just surffing the web. Sometimes it will reboot up to three or four times when I first turn it on in the...

This is caused by a bluescreen or overheating. To see if its a bluescreen, fress f8 on boot and select disable automatic restart on system failure, and wait for it to reboot. This time, it might show a blue screen with white letters. Then you know its an issue with your operating system.

Computer suddenly went sluggish on internet; monitor went blank; even off line solitaire game jammed things up. I ran Norton check and it said no viruses or problems. Any ideas?

You may try Kaspersky Internet Security 2010.AS it can detect malware, spyware more than Norton.Download Kaspersky Internet Security si the link for download page

If this doesn't solve your problem, clean your pc with an Air blower and remove your processor and re apply Heat Sink Paste.sometimes, over heating may caused the system to hang or even reboot.

I have trouble connecting to the internet vie a motorola surfboard modem. I have optus cable this pc works but the XP wont. when I put installation disc in it goes so far then I get an error message...

If you are switching the hardware connected directly to the surfboard, then you may need to call the Internet Service Provider and let them know. They usually set up a session based off of the hardware address of the device hooked up to their modem. If it changes, sometimes you have to get them to close the old session.

Window stops in middle of session have to shut down and restart computer????

hi im wesley. you might have a virus of some sorts or try defragmenting your pc it will also speed it up as this sometimes happens when you have alot of things on your pc and when you delete stuff and put files on all the time it slows down alot and can hang because the files are mixed up on the hard drive. to defragment go to start-all programs-accesories-system tools-defragment then say analyze then defragment.

My computer has stopped recognizing the 160 GB portable hard drive (plug and pray)

better plug it to another pc and observe if it would be recognized by the pc. well, sometimes, portable hard drives takes time to be detected by PC specially when it comes to age, better observe it for about 3-5 mins, and if its not detected, try to touch the usb cord of your portable hard drive connecting to your pc and make some adjustments to it.
