If you do not have a Restore CD to run...

Reboot your computer.

As soon as you see anything on the screen look for a message similiar to:

For Setup press F10, For Recovery press F11.

They can be any "F" key.

Press the one that says "Recovery" and follow the instructions. If you miss it the first time, try again. You only get a few seconds to make the choice.

Dell inspiron 6000 XP has been infected by a virus. How do I erase the virus from my laptop without having to resort to buying the required software from an online software company thats probably cause

Well,if you don't want to buy a software to erase it,then you should have to reinstall your operating system, delete all partition, and INSTALL AN ANTIVIRUS
try AVG antivirus,it's FREE and easy to update, don't want to buy something don't you?
P.S it's hard to restore a computer which is already infected without reinstalling the operating system

Emachines c2881 unable to upgrade to sp2

Yeah, but you may not care for it.

I, personally abhor the automated feature of Service Packs.
I would rather download Manually, and see what I'm getting.

Takes longer?

Sure.

Cramming junk down my throat that I don't want, don't need, and it is just filling good space I need on my harddrive?

Uh, no.

What to download, there's so much stuff, and I don't know what I'm looking at?
Just download the basics.

What?

Okay, download manually one at a time. When you can't boot your computer, Yep, that one has got to go.

Acer, (Excuse me, I mean eMachines), wants how MUCH?
You told them you could buy a better, used, computer, for that much.

Right?
(I know. I know. Be nice. There's always time to be bad. Lol!)

Lemme see. What could Acer have done for 150 bucks.
Motherboard? Ummm. Harddrive and new genuine copy of Windows XP? Ummmm.

Naa!

They were going to pick your computer apart, to see what the problem was.

You stated " I even tried not using the restore cd but a copy of XP again...."

Meaning a;
1) NEW genuine copy of Windows XP?
2) Genuine copy of Windows XP from another computer?
What are we talkin' about here?

I want to know what the original problem was? Why were you using the Restoration Disk in the first place?

Post back in a Comment.

Recovery disc

Evidently Toshiba has a special page for this... it claims there is a recovery partition you can access to restore it to factory condition. Should this option fail, you can use the recovery discs it came with to restore manually... assuming the hard drive itself did not come defective (which is possible). If you determine the hard drive is shot I suggest you make a warranty claim... if you want it asap, buy a 2.5 in SATA HDD and get the service manual to install it, then run the recovery discs. I will warn you though these new laptops (2009+) sometimes don't take well to the 'wrong' parts being installed, the BIOS may not recognize it, or the recovery discs may not like it. If you going to go the surgical route, let me know. Good luck.

Need a windows 7 cd to reload it on my computer. Hard drive went bad after 1 year and 1 month.

Don't complicate just download an image from whatever website, or a backup from a friend, and your computer have a sticker on it with your serial number know also as Microsoft COA (Certificate Of Authenticity), just make sure to download the right Windows 7 version, and when it ask for your serial number go ahead and write down the serial on the sticker.

I want to take my dimention 3000 back to factory settings?

Hello,
First, if the computer has the restore partition, you should see a blue bar at the top of the screen immediately following completion of POST. After two seconds you should see a message about loading the descriptor for PBR2. If you don't see these things after you start or restart the computer, the restore function is not operational. If you do see them you need to restart the computer, press CTRL and F11 toward the end of POST, and release both keys simultaneously before you see the message about the descriptor for PBR2. If you are successful you will get a screen that has an option to restore the computer to factory configuration.
If you don't see the blue bar, try using Disk Management to see how many partitions you can find. If the partition exists, you should find three. First, a utility partition formatted in FAT-16 about 32 MB in size. Second should be the NTFS partition used for the C drive; this one will be the largest partition on the drive. Third should be a FAT-32 partition of two to three Gigabytes in size. This last is the restore partition. If you wish you can try to fix it, but you will need to study Dan Goodell's page found here: Inside the Dell PC Restore Partition.
If you don't have the restore partition and can't fix it, the only thing you can do is find the CDs that should have been shipped with the computer and restore the system manually. If you don't have the Dell Windows Reinstallation CD, you can ask for one here: Dell Replacement Disks. If you don't live in the U.S. you will need to contact Dell Tech Support for your region and request the CDs.
Hope this helps!

I want to reset my computer back to the factory default settings but I don't know how.

there are a few things you can do.

1 restore from the second partition containing teh system restore software (if it's a newer machine)

or

2 buying a retail copy of the operating system you use and put the cd-rom in the drive and just turn the computer on.. after that just follow on screen instructions, pretty self explanatory.

I am on vacation and don't have the drivers/with me and don't know how long its been since the drive last worked. So restoring may not work either. Any place to download the drivers??? Fixya...

Need to buy a software that automatically search the internet for all drivers that your computer needs, including dvd or cd rom drivers. Such software can download drivers that you need, if it's better than going to your dvd rom's manufacturers website to download your driver there. Driver magician is but just one software among many like it. Driver solution is also good. Try it. Hope this would lessen your problems with drivers. Have a nice day friend.

I need to restore my acer aspire one series model ZG5 to original settings but nothing that I am finding online is helping :( Pressing alt f10 does nothing and when i do get a restore window, the only...

Well, in actual fact, there is no 'magic button' to restore a computer to it's original state. What has to be done is a fresh install of the operating system, wiping out the current contents of the hard disk. Hopefully your system came with a restore cd though sometimes the manufacturer just puts the restore data on a partition of your hard drive, and you have to restore from there, using a procedure they've (hopefully) documented. If you don't have either cd or restore partition, then be very careful just wiping your disk as you may end up having to buy a new operating system distribution disk,(expensive) then you have the grief of finding all the drivers to load plus the motherboard chipset drivers, and they can be a real pain to try and find. I have an acer aspire AST180 UA381B and I need the system restore disks but they do not carry them anymore. What can I do?

I would suggest you install Linux Mint 10, a free operating system.

Without the restore disks, you would have to buy a new Windows CD. Have a friend burn an ISO image of Linux Mint. Just go to www.linuxmint.com, and there are lots of helpful tips there on how to install. Linux Mint has a similar feel to Windows, so it should be good!
