Question about Air Tools & Compressors

Air compressor w/5hp motor

I have a 5hp 60 gallon tank compressor, the motor works when I take the belt off ffom the pump, and I can turn the pump easily with my hand but when I connect the belt together with the pump and motor it runs for a few seconds and starts slowing down. Then i took the outlet line off from the pump going to the tank and everything started running fine, it's just when i put the outline line back on the pump is when the motor starts slowing down and stopping like it's building a lot of pressure but the pressure isn't going into the tank. is it my motor that is going bad or just not strong enough to pump air into the tank or is it something else?

I have what sounds like the same problem.  My compressor works occasionally, but mostly barely turns or starts to hum until the breaker trips.  I was wondering about the compressor pump check valve?

Assuming that the motor is factory matched to pump, it should be powerful enough to turn the pump. Most problems with motors are related to pressure switch and/or capacitor. The pressure switch could have burned contacts causing low amps to reach the motor. The capacitor should test at least 90% of rated value printed on capacitor. Some volt meters have capacitor check setting. Also this motor at 5 hp must draw lots of amps. The outlet should be rated at least 20 amps and plug the compressor directly into oulet without an extension cord. \
Secondary problem is the in-tank check valve. The check valve should hold in tank pressure without leaking back to the head of the pump. If check valve leaks, replace it with any brand of same thread size. enjoy

My 5 hp campbell hausfeld model hl 7017 pumps up to pressure but when it drops the motor starts but the compressor wont turn the belt just slips until pressure drops off to about 30 psi

Your tank check valve is not closing properly. It's a valve on the tank where the air line from the pump head attaches, It allows air in but not back out of the tank through the pump. When the pressure swtich turns the motor off, valve on the pressure switch lets the air out of the head so the motor can restart without any pressure in the pump head when the pressure in the tank drops. On rare occasion, you can clean the check valve out and it'll work again, more often than not you have to replace it.

If you remove the fan belt and the motor runs without a load,

one of your motor capacitors is bad. some motors take one

capacitor, some take two. the capacitor is what helps the

the motor give that extra torque to run the compressor pump.

good luck!

JUST HAD THE 2ND MOTOR IN LESS THAN A YEAR GO OUT. Have had the wiring checked and everything is wired correct and and with the proper size wire and breakers. This unit is not working that hard or often,...

There are only 2 things that I can think of at the moment. Make sure the new motor is a compressor rated motor it makes a difference in how much start up torque it has. The next thing is make sure that there is a bleeder valve and one way check valve some where between the air pump and tank. It should go like this air pump, line from air pump, bleeder valve, then one way chech valve, tank. If there isnt a bleeder valve to bleed off the head pressure after it kicks off then that means that it is starting under to high of pressure and that is very hard on motor and the one way valve keeps the air in tank from going back to air pump and leaking out of bleeder. If you have any questions get back to me. I hope this helps you. Kyle

The Electric motor does not have enough torque to start compressor. It is hooked up to 230V with 40 amp single phase. checked voltage with meter so I know it has enough voltage.

Does it trip the breaker or does the motor just hum and not turn the compressor? The motor may need a start capacitor. Do not keep tryin to start you can burn out the start winding on the motor.
TURN OFF POWER AND LOCK OUT.... try and take the belts off (if it has belts)of the motor and compressor and make sure both turn freely. IF THEY TURN FREELY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE MOTOR. You said voltage, wire size and breakers are the right size.
Hope this helps you with your problem...Jim...please leave a comment

Standing in front of the SS5L5 pump pulley, looking at it,should it turn CW or CCW?

Easy to tell what direction pump turns. Look at pump pulley and notice and fan shape of the spokes. The pulley blows air across the pump. Most pumps turn ccw, however verify by looking at fan. Good luck

I need aparts break down list for the pump on this compressor to find the part number of the fly wheel. Mine is bent

The part # is 97335756 (Belt wheel). Typically its hard to bend a belt wheel. They usually break not bend. I would check the crankshaft and front bearing before purchasing the belt wheel.

No air pressure past 60PSI on a 125PSI Campbell Hausfield WL61110

Your comperssor is oilless type and suffers from short cylinder / piston life. When the compressor no longer reaches cycle pressure the cylinder / piston should be replaced. These parts are available at I believe that the part number is wl210300aj. Not expensive, enjoy.
