Hello
you will need to use the parallel printer port on your pc.
this is the default type of interface built into the hp printer.
it will be a 25 pin female connector probably built onto the motherboard.
a standard parallel cable is whats required.
25 pin male plug on one end and a 36 pin male "D" style connector on the other.
25 pin mates with pc 36 pin mates with printer, all newer versions of windows
have the hp lj 4 driver supplied on the install disk.

ps if your system does'nt have a parallel port you can install an aftermarket one,
but ill bet your 25 pin connector is a parallel port.

check it out thru windows.

----- START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL > SYSTEM > HARDWARE TAB >
DEVICE MANAGER > PORTS.

this will list the ser and par ports if any on your system.
good luck.

What connector/interface does your PC has
9-pin or 25-pin connector

If it has 9-pin connector: use the following:
DB-9 RS-232 Serial Connection
or
DB-25 RS-232 Serial Connection

If it has 25-pin connector: use the following:
DB-25 Serial Connection
or
DB-25 RS-232 Serial Connection

If you are configuring the computer to use an RS-422A serial port, you need a special cable. Contact the computer or printer network manufacturer to see if an RS-422A cable is available. If no cable is available, contact your computer manufacturer for your computer pin assignments and have a cable constructed.

The default configuration for the serial port on the printer is for RS-232C serial communication. To set the printer to use RS-422A serial communication, change the control panel Serial Menu’s SERIAL setting to SERIAL=RS-422.

SOURCE: HP Laser Jet 4 Plus to iBook G4 serial to usb

serial to usb is not plug and play so i don't believe this configuration will ever work.
parrallel to usb is plug and play 90% of the time.
purchasing and installing a port replicator is a 100% fix as long as the formatter on the printer is working properly. good luck!

HP LaserJet 4 will not power up. For several months, it has been taking longer and longer to power up. Flip the switch and nothing happens for minutes, then it cycles on. Now, nothing. No lights, no hum,...

Hello,

The AC Power supply in your printer is out. The laserjet 4 and 4+ printers would both have long power up times when the power supply would start to die. You can get a replacement power supply very cheap now since the printers are older. We have them in stock as pulls from parts printers that should work just fine for you. We sell them for $30 plus shipping. We also have service manuals available if you need one. Let me know if you need more help.

Laserjet 4 printer will not print

You need to go through a hub or use a crossover cable.

A centronics /parralel cable would be a lot easier.

Serial port on HP Laserjet 4M Plus

buy the adaptor for this these ports are called lpt ports they make adapters to run down to size

they also make a lpt printer port switch this is connected easy connect from printer to switch one printer cord then buy 2 other printer cords to hook to other computers
this is not a converter this is a switch

the printer cords can either be made on spot at most computer store or bought from fry's electronics they always have these in stock the proper lines your looking for
