Question about JVC AV-48WP30 48" Rear Projection Television

AV-48WP30 - Is this a convergence board issue?

I think all I need to do is replace the convergence board, or, more specifically the STK392-110 chips. But can somebody confirm? I just bought this TV for $100 and figured it's probably this problem, but the guy I bought it from said a TV tech told him it was a lens problem? I, however, think it's the convergence board. Am I right? is it just the SK chips or could it be more likely a burnt resister or something? I can move all the Blue convergence points around, just they're warped out of shape and the ones on the top can't go high enough.

Should I buy that $70 convergence components kit (forget the website offhand) that comes with both chips, as well as all the resisters and such to replace them all? What do you all recommend?

Here's two pics that should show the problem.

Okay I confirmed from reading around that I'm now 99% sure that my problem is those convergence amplifier chips or whatever the proper term is for them.

I downloaded the Service Manual but I don't see step-by-step instructions for getting to the convergence board for removal and replacement. Can somebody help me out in that respect? I'm not sure if I want to just go removing stuff without knowing the proper step-by-step procedure. Thanks!

Okay that's what I thought. Though unless I'm looking in the wrong document or the document is missing the section I'm looking for, I don't see the step-by-step instructions in the service manual for the removal of the convergence pcb. it has instructions for removal of other boards, but not that one. I'm okay at soldering and I don't mind tryign to replace the chips myself, but I"m a little more scared of the proper procedure for getting to the board for removal in this unit.

  • matt314159 Oct 29, 2008

So from the response so far, yes the STK's are bad. Now I'm trying to locate specific instructions as far as getting at them for this unit. I have the service manual, but while it gives instructions on getting at quite a few of the items it doesn't seem to include instructions for getting the convergence board out. I want to know the right procedure, i.e. the order of operations, etcetera, so I can do everything just right.

Does the kit athttp://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/product_... include detailed instructions for removing the convergence board out of the TV set?

  • matt314159 Oct 29, 2008

Sorry for all the double-and triple, etcetera posting. I really just need to know now how to remove the convergence board from the television set. I ordered the $70 kit from the link above, and if it doesn't include instructions for getting the board out, I will need to figure out how to do that. That's all I need now.

  • matt314159 Oct 29, 2008

Thank you that is exactly what I was looking for!

I have another question, I don't know if it's too late or not since I accepted the last solution...

I bought the $70 kit that had the entire lineup of resisters as well as the STK392-110s....but then I just got to thinking, a lot of people recommend using the STk392-180's instead, since they seem more beefy in their performance and reliability. Would it be a better idea to get the 180's instead, and use them? I have the board out, and have removed the old chips...look at how the thermal grease had been applied:

Anywya if someone can let me knowif it's a better idea to use the 800's instead of the 110's, let me know. Thanks

,you must replaced this IC in order that will works better again.STK 392-xxx ICs and it's associated resistor, this resistor automatically change value, check the repair kit to repair the convergence issues with the AV 48WP30- model rear projection televisions. click here http://servicemanuals.vstore.ca/product_info.php/pName/av48wp30-convergence-repair-kit/cName/convergence-repair-kits .If you bring this to a service center they cost you $400 to $500,but if you buy the repair kit you can save more, don't wory it is very easy because there is installation guide including in the repair kit. Feel free to ask whatever the result... click the link for sample picture guide step by step installation.hope this helps Goodluck and Good bless

Convergence ICs with stk-392-110 can be accessed through the front.
Take off the speaker grill and panel behind that.
There will be a large heat-sink under the picture tubes that is the convergence power board.
Disconnect all cable going to and from that board de-solder the amps .
Replace any burnt or open resistors.
Plug everything back in turn the tv on and adjust any alignment needed in the regular tv menu.

If you have problem even after installing the convergence ic

Probably one or more of the feed resistors on the amp in that circuit have failed.
There are a series of 1.5 and 2.2 ohm resistors 1w on that board.
Take-out your trusty DMM and test each one for open condition or change in value and replace any suspected.

Regarding the kit it may be helpful .

The stk`s are bad and need to be replaced. also there might be a few bad resistors. your convergence circuit is also bad.

JVC AV-48WP30 Convergence Problem

If you know how to solder, I would suggest to just replace the STK ICs and some of the low value resistors. If you do not how to solder replacing the entire board is the way to to get the TV fix. You might still need to adjust the convergence after the board replacement.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Yes, it does not happen often but you may have installed or got a new chip that is bad--you did apply heat sink compound to the new chips?

Check all the resistors carefully when you do this and double check all the soldering you do.

I have a jvc av48wp30 tv and need a wire diagram

Looking the convergence board from the side of the resistors (The chips will be behind the resistors), you have from de left to right:

1.5 ohms, 150ohms, 220ohms, 2.2ohms, 3.3 ohms, 220ohms, 1.8ohms, 220ohms, 150ohms, 150ohms, 1.5ohms, and dispose horizontal in relation of the other resistors (the one near to the Ic is 2.2ohms and the other is 220ohms).

Hope this helps...

JVC AV-48WP30 will not give a picture

Replace the convergence IC`s again using original Sanyo chips (STK 392-110 or STK 392-180). Make sure to use plenty of heat sink compound. Coat the entire back side of the chips. Also look to see if any of the low ohm resistors are burned. A shorted chip will cause the thumping sound and the set will shutdown. I am guessing that you used generic IC`s as a replacement. They are cheap and the leggs fall off when you apply too much heat during soldering. Dont wory about the CRT driver or the deflection board, they are probably fine.
