To shift gear properly, while riding the bike you be sure you are turning the paddles, and shift the gear.
Try to avoid shifting gears while riding standing up, this stress the gear system.

How can I reinstall gears after changing rear tire?

I assume you mean to reinstall the rear wheel with the cluster, as there is no need to remove any gears for a tire change. Try the written instructions and pictures at Bicycle Repair Remove Install Rear Bicycle Bike Wheels by Jim Langley and/or one of the videos below. Be sure to first move the right shift lever to the high gear position (should be little or no tension on the shift cable and the derailleur should move all the way outward from center.

Need instuctions on how you shift

Google bicycle shifting technique, for example:

You should NEVER run cross-chained (big-big or small-small). The drive train performs best when the chainline is as close to straight as possible.

Excess sideways stress on the chain will wear it out prematurely and decrease its normal efficiency.

To demonstrate this for yourself, put the bike in the same combination of gears you

How do I operate the 8 gears on my bicycle as I have no instruction manual ? Please advise. My bicycle is a "Carolina Free Spirit". Thanks

Google bicycle shifting technique, for example:

http://coachlevi.com/cycling/complete-beginner-guide-to-bicycle-gears-shifting/

The basics of shifting are these:

1) The big ring and right side of the cassette in back are for speed.

2) The small ring and the left side of the cassette are for high torque, lower speed

3) The middle ring works with all rear cogs.

Avoid crossing left front to right rear and vice-cersa. It cause excess side loads on the chain.

18 speed bike 6 gear shift works fine 3 gear

If the cable is rusty or otherwise binding it won't let the derailleur fall toward the smaller sprockets when the control is moved. Likewise, it may not even let you move the control in the direction that pulls the cable (bigger rings).

If you don't know much about the process I suggest you read this:

http://coachlevi.com/cycling/complete-beginner-guide-to-bicycle-gears-shifting/

and take the bike to a Local Bike Shop for a look-see and maybe a tune-up.

I need an owners manual for the land rider bike. bike takes to long to shift up or down, sometimes not at all. thank you, frank

most bicycle owners manuals do not explain bicycle mechanics and are rarely of any use other than basic bicycle safety. You shifting issue is not specific to your brand of bicycle anyway, as it is simply a mechanical issue. Probably a good cleaning of the drivetrain and re-lube would make the bike shift better. Use a degreaser and stiff brush and water and clean up the chain and the chain rings and the gears or cogs on the back hub. Follow up with a good chain lube.

Problem with top/low adjustment screws on shimano gears

Forget the screws as those are more for fine tuning once you are close to having it set correctly. Where the shift cable connects to the shifter on the bars you will typically find an adjustment knob (note that you may have the same type of adjustment knob where the cable meets the gear shift mechanism also) which the cable rides in. You will make much larger jumps in adjustment when using this method as opposed to using the screws located on the gear changing mechanism. Best of luck to you on the fix!!
