The crawfish smell is algae buildup in the drain. the unit needs to be cleaned at the evaporator and the drain needs to be checked.

I tried to run my air conditioner the other day, but the house started to smell like dust and dirt. If I pull the vent off and clean in there, how far back do I need to go to get all the dirt? I tri

Not all of your question was view-able, but sounds like your drain tube may be plugged if you are getting musty smells. Inspect the drain tube for clogging (lower right of unit). Pour a glass of water over the metal fins and watch to make sure it drains correctly down and out the tube. Look outside or at the far end where it drains and be sure water comes out. If not, try a bristle brush style pipe cleaner wire to insert and clean the opening. Once its draining well, you should use a mild bleach solution and spray bottle to hose down the entire inside heat exchanger. Never put anything into/between the metal fins except cleaning fluid. Using a brush on the fins will mostly just push the dust back and compact it so the water can't dislodge it. After a good cleaning, it will help to run just the fan or heat mode for a while so the vents dry before using cooling mode.

You should look in the air handler( Where the indoor blower is located) or in the plenum (where the duct system originate at the air handler) for any dead and rotting rats. Residential central air systems are sealed (uses circulated air only) and do not use outdoor air.

I just had it installed and smell gas. if it says unvented , does it need vented or am i ok. im 73 yrs old and dont know much about gas heaters

An un-vented heater should never smell like raw gas, you may get an odor of combustion by-products but never raw gas. If you are getting the raw gas smell you either have a gas leak or incomplete combustion. Always follow manufacturers operation instructions that state "open window 1/4" to allow combustion air" If the unit is brand new, you will get an odor for 20 minutes or so of oils burning off of the heater but that smell should go away. Do you have a Carbon monoxide detector in the house? You should!

The unit works as of right now...but there is a smell of something burning

Quite often, if you smell like a plastic burning smell, one of the capacitors is faulty, and should be checked immediately. Quite often the compressor start capacitor, will get hot and start to melt. Have it checked by qualified technician or electrician, as they are dangerous and can give a fatal shock if not experienced with handling them, even when power is shut off. $20-$30 part, and 1/2hr. labor should take care of it. The cover on roof unit, has to be removed to access the capacitors, so watch for bees, wasps, when you do so. Make sure power is off at breaker panel.

I would have a tech come out and check the voltage going into the fan relay and fan itself. The smell being as how it is coming through the vents in the house tells me that the problem has got to be at the blower or in the area at the blower fan which leads me to the possibilty that the smell could be the windings on the motor. This could be because the voltage may be to high. Good luck on repairs

3 ton goodman heat pump package unit, odor coming from vents

I ran upon this a few years agoafter 20+ years in the industry it is actually called "DIRTY SOCK". In the winter the drain pan and trap dry out and all the junk left behind when the summer rolls around mix with the condensateand cause the odor. "Home owner fix" pour a cup of bleach down the drain and in the pan let sit for about an hour then pour a gallon of hot water, that usually takes care of it.

Have a strong smell of bakelite coming from vents with air cleaner on. What is the problem?

Something is hot inside. Turn off the air cleaner and run the fan on manual. If the smell goes away, have the unit cleaned and serviced. If it remains, your blower motor or belt is going bad.
