Get bose to make a warranty replacement or repair, its not a user servicable part, infcat its going to be difficult to find the exact problem even if you REALLY want to open it up, it may also be a faulty opamp on IC not switching.

Yes...within a range. The display will automatically lighten and darken depending on the amount of light in the room. During the day or when there are bright lights in the room, the display will go to full brightness. When the lights go off or the room is otherwise darkened, the display will shift down to a lower brightness. You can make the "lower brightness" a bit brighter by holding down the CLOCK SET button and pressing the 'volume up' button.
Select Clock Adjustment mode Press the [FM] or [AM] button. Select the "Clock Adjust"/ "CLK ADJ" display. 2 Enter Clock Adjust mode Press the [4] or [¢] button for at least 1 second. The clock display blinks. 3 Adjust the hours Press the [FM] or [AM] button. Adjust the minutes Press the [4] or [¢] button. 4 Exit Clock adjustment mode Press the [MENU] button.
You must enter Standy mode to adjust the clock. To do this Press the (SRC) button. Select the "STBY" display 1. Select Clock Adjustment Mode Push the Control knob (the one on the right) towards (FM) or (AM) Select the "CLCK ADJ" display. 2. Enter Clock Adjust mode Press the Control knob for at least 1 second. The clock display blinks. 3. Adjust the hours Push the Control knob towards (FM) or (AM). Adjust the minutes Push the Control knob towards ( '>' ) 4. Manual Clock Adjustment 1 Select Clock Adjustment mode Press the [FM] or [AM] button. Select the "Clock ADJ" display. 2 Enter Clock Adjust mode Press the [4] or [¢] button for at least 1 second. This could be the battery causing the display to act strangely. If the radio still works audio-wise, the following should fix the display:
The older model wave radios have either a 9v or 3 AA batteries (accessible from the bottom). Remove any battery, and reset the system by unplugging the power cord for about 40 seconds. Plug it back in without the battery attached.
If the problem goes away- replace the battery or batteries. (which is only there to hold the clock time, presets etc when not plugged in)
BTW- you'll have to set the clock, alarm, presets etc after this procedure.
If the problem doesn't go away, call Bose. I think they can repair this for $99 and/or offer a new one as a trade-in discounted.
Hi I read that if you hold down the Clock Set button and use the volume adjust you can change the display brightness. Hope this helps with your rpoblem
Have you done the presets on the memory. Do that then select the station you want to wake up to. Hopefully its fm. Per the instruction manuel . Set or adjust the alarm time if necessary. Press the Alarm on/off button if necessary until one of the alarm indicatior either the note or alarm appears on display when the buzzer alarm is selected. While the alarm time display is flashing press the tuner button to select am, fm, or tv band. The selected indicatior appears in the display ( Note : you can only select the band when you have selected wake to music. While the alarm time display is flashing press one of the preset buttons to select the station you wish to hear when the alarm goes off.
sounds like a loose cable from the control bard to , some one will have to open up to fix, i recommend bose do that for you,
as for fm volume, the same could be the cause as the fm antenna coudl be disconnected, ( are you using an external FM antenna ?)
According to the manual, in STANDBY MODE, push the control knob towards FM or AM and select CLK ADJ. Press the control knob for at least 1 second, the clock display blinks. Adjust the hours by pushing the control knob towards FM or AM, and the minutes by pushing the control knob right or left. Exit CLK ADJ mode by pressing the MENU button. Hope this helped.

WILL NOT COME ON WHEN PLUGED IN
It's not the mute button the remote. It just stopped.
Do you think this is engineered to fail at this point?
