Question about Maytag Refrigerators

Refrigerator MAYTAG MSD2454GRQ: Ice maker not working properly. Ice cubes are made, but water drips inside the freezing compartment, resulting on icy streaks on the walls. The cubes cannot be dispensed by way of the actuator pad, because the cubes are being crushed when actuator pad is pressed. I decided to defrost the freezing compartment. I turned off the ice maker. After 2 days of defrosting with water dripping from the ice bin, I was able to get the ice bin out. At that point I discovered that the compartment on the back of the tray that holds the ice bin is cracked and inside there is a solid block of ice. I tried to get this tray out but after taking out all the screws I was only able to lift the tray from the front but it's still attached to the back wall and, thus, I couldn't remove it. I need your advise... It will help if you could also give me a rough estimate on how much I may end up paying if I call a technician. Thanks, FWL

So far, the advices received are too general. They don't help. I still need to hear from an expert on servicing Maytag refrigerators.

    To bestdarngood:
To post a picture of the cracked freezer compartment is a good suggestion. I own a digital camera and know how to download my pictures and then send them as an attachment to my emails. However I have no idea and need instructions as to how to post them on your site.

    My answer to "fixexpert":

Thank you for the diagrams. The compartment that is frozen solid is part of the ICE BIN. Specifically is Part # 20 (PS109031-sub 61005614 ENCLOSURE, ICE). I will probably also have to replace small parts that go inside such enclosure, such as parts # 8, 22, 33 & 34. Thanks.

I accept your apologies and may get to a Live Chat, as you suggest... However, in the meantime could you tell how do I post a picture on your site? I think that if I show a picture of the frozen cracked compartment in the ice bin, it will help your experts on providing a more specific helpful advice. Thanks.

    To Bestdarngood:

Thank you for your advice. I agree with you that part PS109031 is the one I need (I was even able to confirm that Series # 10 is the right series # for my Maytag refrigerator). I may order it from Part Select, but first I want to get a price quote from an appliance store located close to my house. If the difference in price is not too big, I prefer to buy it over the counter. I won't be able to go the store until Monday, though, since they are not open today.

I haven't accepted your solution yet, because I understand that this will end the process of getting in touch with the experts of FIXYA. I cannot afford to do that since at this point I don't know if I can proceed alone.

Bestdarngood was very helpful and I have to thank him for getting involved with my Maytag ice bin problem. Even though he didn't have specific experience in Maytag, Bestdarngood used a lot of common sense in his advice. Making me send him a few pictures of ice bin to his email address, for example. Also his pointing out that I still needed to defrost the enclosure, before trying to remove the tray, etc. I haven't solve the problem yet, but the part is on its way and I seem to see some light at the end of the tunnel already.

Price at part select for PS109031is $39, that is already discounted, as original regular price was $47,

I do not think that a local dealer can give you any price better than this.

Good luck.

Just to know how things go on the street market, was the local seller price any better than the $39 web price?

On behalf of FixYa, I apologize to you that you are not getting the proper information that you desire, to cure your problem.
Reading the above "solutions" is NOT what FixYa is all about. Far from it.
Unfortunatly, there are several people here that "try" to help by "Cutting & Pasting", and think that they are assisting, but, sometimes not understanding your dilemma, that you want to fix it yourself,,,Again, please accept my apologies.
What I would do, if I were you, is to open a "Live Chat", with the heading
"Maytag Repair Person Needed".
If the person who answers is not qualified in Maytag, terminate the chat window.
This is the very best that I can do for you.
I hope that you accept my sincere apologies.
Thanks.

Well, I would think $150 or more depending on exactly what all needs to be replaced but it will depend on the area, it will cost so much for them just to come to your house and then depending on what they do, it will cost a certain amount. Make sure to get estimates before they come and tell them what you have done. many times a part can be bought cheaper from partstore.com or partselect.com

You may have to remove the back panel of the unit in order to get the cracked part detached.

If you want or need anything else let me know, the home page will give you a way to search for a repair service if you should decide to go that route, good luck

any parts you need should be found at the following page

    http://www.partstore.com/Model/Maytag/Ma...

I'm sorry that I'm not so much an expert at Maytag as other brands, but if you would post a picture of the inside of the freezer of the part that is cracked, I would be more help in describing how to take it off. I believe that if you can't find a way on the inside to take it apart, that it might be held on through the back of the freezer

    thanks for the pictures

here is the part for ordering purposes ->
    http://www.partselect.com/PartDetail.asp...
here is a diagram with the part ->
    http://www.partselect.com/Schematics/May...
With this one, it looks like the lip on the top back of it may just be hooked up into it and/or you are getting caught on the auger when trying to get it off or even the ice is holding it if you haven't completely defrosted it yet, or possibly there are some screws underneath that I don't see on the diagrams.

As I really haven't worked on this model, I can't be sure about exactly why you can't get it off but many times when you order the new part, you can look on the new part for anything that you may be missing and figure out better that way of how to get it apart. Or in your case, since it's already broken, then do whatever it takes to get it out, maybe in multiple pieces.

    quote "

    Hello, Bestdarngood:

You were right! The ice was holding the Ice
Enclosure. I turned off the freezer and with a hair dryer I was able to melt the
block of ice inside the enclosure. Once the ice was mostly melted I was able to
remove the tray without problem. When the ice enclosure was out, I found
still connected to the back wall the ice
    bucket
auger drive motor kit, (Part #
PS46273, item # 8 in the ice bin diagram =$74.58), the solenoid
(Part #PS108675, item # 33), ice dispenser engagement joke
    (Part # 110205, item # ), guide joke (Part #
    PS117000, item # 22) and joke assembly (Part # 649762, item #
    34).

I made a note of the color wires connected to the
auger drive motor and proceeded to disconnect them. I took the
motor out (it's quite heavy!...). However the other items are
still connected to the back wall, by way of a wire harness. I tried to unplug
the harness from the back wall, but I couldn't do it just by pulling. My guess
is that probably there are locking tabs that need to be depressed in order to
unplug the harness. Am I guessing correctly? I will
have to unplug the harness one way or another, once I get the new Ice
Enclosure in order to put everything back together. I'm hoping that all the
parts mentioned in the paragraph above are working fine. Especially the
auger drive motor because at $74.58 is quite
    expensive.

On Monday I will go to the Parts Appliance store
and see if I get a good price on the Ice Enclosure tray. If not I will order
it by mail but not from Partselect.com. I've found a site that is much
    cheaper. Here it is:
    http://www.appliancepartspros.com/
For example the Ice Enclosure is on sale for
$32.65, which is almost $7 less than Partselect, while the Auger Drive Motor
(hope I don't need it) is on sale for $57.10 which is $17.48 less than
    Partselect. That's quite a difference!...

Well, that's all I have for now. Let me know about
the locking tabs on the wire harness.

Thank you for your help. I'll keep you posted on
any further progress on the fixing of the ice maker.

    lopezfra"

Yes, the harness usually has locking tabs, and yes, I do know about that other website and was not aware of the price difference, generally they are very close and both are very good quality. If you need anything else, let me know, otherwise I would appreciate it if you could rate my solution as a "Fixya" which helps keep me helping great people like you.

    have a good day

I can also locate the service manual for you if you are still wanting to go that route and that will give you all the information you are looking for. How long have you owned the machine? Ice maker is leaking water at the rear of the ice maker, somewhere around the water inlet. Water is dripping slowly and building up an ice ***** BEHIND (outside) the ice cube storage bin AND inside the...

Hello,The reason all the ice freezes together and you see icecicles forming from the icemaker,is going to caused by the water inlet valve on the back of the refrig.is not fully closing but instead it's seeping water through it and dripping into the ice storage bucket. To stop that from happening the water inlet valve would need to be replaced.
On refrigerators that have a built in water filter, alot of times their will be 2 water valves and the one that is bad causing water to seep through it will be the one called the SECONDARY valve.

Water side works, however the icemaker does not function

It appears your model has two sets of water valves. One for the ice maker and one that circulates the water though the water filter.I will get a better diagram as soon as possible. While I'm getting that together would like you to fill the ce maker with tap water and turn on. let freeze and if the ice maker cycles and dumps then it points to the water valve. Noe if the ice maker just sits there with frozen cubes and does not dump then it is possible the thermostat inside the ice maker is defective. They are replaceable along with the water valve. Try that first and let me know your results. I will assist you through this, Thanks, sea Breeze

Maytag ice maker will not release cubes

Sounds like it has a " seeping " water valve . Only thing to do is replace the water inlet valve . There is a certain amount of water to go into icemaker at fill . A seeping valve will let water continually drip into icemaker , making large cubes which icemaker cannot dump . A larger amount of seeping , will overfill the icemaker , and drip into the freezer and floor .

Maytag msd2356ae ice maker will only give me hollow ice any ideas.

Hi,
Hollow ice cubes are most often cause by insufficient water supply. Icemakers fill for about 7.5 seconds, resulting in about 4.75 oz. (140 cc) of water into the ice cube mold. If there s not enough water pressure available at the fridge, cubes may end up hollow and/or the fill could continue to dribble, eventually causing the fill tube to freeze closed.
pls rate my suggestion.........

Ice maker freezes up and drips water

I am assuming you have the ice maker that the tray twists to release the ice. There is a new tray out with a wall to prevent the water spilling over. The part number is

Ice Maker Freezing Up and Ice not dispensing

Check your ice cube tray to see if it is warped. Mine was. I took the tray off and dipped it into boiling water and remoulded it to the original shape and re-installed it. So far no problems. The tray gets warped because of the ice cube release mechanism. The tray is rotated around until it meets a block on one corner which creates the twisting motion we used to do on manual trays. Over time it tends to warp the tray. Good luck
