I need instructions for putting the top back down. I opened the scanner, then raised the bed to put in the ink. It has a catch to hold it open, I can't figure how to release the catch to let it back down. I have gone through all the instructions that came with it but it don't show how to release that stupid catch

It is located inside the printer. To access the ink the printer must be turned on. Lift the scanner bed from the front and it should open revealing the guts of the machine. After a few seconds the ink cartridges will slide across from right to left and back stopping in the center.
They usually have a light blue lid over them.
The instructions that go with this illustration essentially say the following: - With the power to the printer turned ON, open the paper output tray, gently. (Not shown being done, here, but rather the following...) - Lift the scanning unit/copier bed by the front with hands placed as shown .... the carriage with the ink cartridges in it will move to a convenient position automatically. (This is why you need the power on when you do this, if replacing ink cartridges.)
here's the rest of what to do:
Push tab(s), (A), in front of ink cartridge(s). Lift ink cartridge(s) by the front, as shown by the blue curved arrow. DO NOT TOUCH OR RELEASE THE PRINTHEAD LEVER, (B). Easy enough to avoid, but it ruins things if printhead is loosed while ink cartridges are in it. Not that there are colored areas just behind the ink cartridge receptacles, that show what colors belong in which slot, when you put the new ones in. ...When putting the new ones in, be sure you have removed the tape covering the contacts etc, and be sure you don't touch the contacts nor the ink nozzle area on the bottom... both are potentially ruined by being touched. And lastly, this nice animated image shows ink cartridges being put in:
1. Raise the scanner bed and position the scanner support to hold the bed up, exposing the printer cartridges.
2. Press down on the tab on the end of the cartridge cover to open the cartridge bay. Pull the old cartridge straight out of the bay and properly dispose of it. Remove the tape and stickers from the new cartridge and insert the new cartridge into the bay.
3. Press the cover down until it locks in place, securing the cartridge. Repeat the process on the other cartridge if necessary.
4. Lift the scanner bed to release the scanner support. Lower the scanner bed to close the printer.
These instructions are for color or black cardridges.
Turn on the printer by pressing the power button.
Flip down the frontaccess door by grasping it on the upper right corner (just under the scanning bed) and pulling it down toward you. the cardridges will automaticly move to the right give you access to them. Press down on the top of the ink cartridge. This will release the cartridge. Slide it forward and out of the machine. Peel off the cover from the ink cardridge. This is a pink piece of plastic /tape like lift-off tab. Lift it up and off the cartridge.
Put the new cartridge inside of your Officejet J4580 by inserting it, label facing upward, into the open slot. Press it back into the unit and down lightly. You will hear it click into place. Close the access door. Wait for the alignment process to complete that will most likely require you to print a alignment page and place it in the scanner bed then press "OK".
Just open the top cover together with the scanner bed. When the cartridge carrier move in the middle of the printer, that is the time you can replace the catridge. Lift up the top cover for the cartridge carrier and then the cartridges.
When replacing the cartridge. Push the cartridge down the carrier, you will hear a snapping sound. Return the top cover for the carrier and the scanner bed.
If the printer does not support double sided printing, you need to take the printed page and put it back into the paper tray upside down to print on the other side of the page. If you have a document several pages long then you need to print a page at a time. The odd page on one side and the even page on the other side.
