Question about Nikon D50 Digital Camera

D50 Won't Turn On

I am beginning to have problems with my D50 not powering up correctly. At times, I can turn it on and view pictures through the LCD monitor, but it won't take a picture. This is an intermittent problem as it will suddenly begin working again (like the next day AFTER a wedding)! This has happened several times and has caused me to miss some pretty important pictures. It has never been dropped or abused, and has had a fully charged battery when this occurs. I don't know what to do. It is working at the moment and I am reluctant to ship away a functioning camera for repair. It's like taking your car to the shop for a repair because you hear a rattle under your hood, but as soon as the mechanic listens for the rattle it's gone!! Please advise on what I should do. Thanks in advance.

Re: D50 Won't Turn On

I have the same problem, caused by a small amount of water getting in the command dial slot. If I leave the camera switched on I can push the battery in and out firmly a few times and it comes good. I suspect a dirty film from the water in the contacts. I am trying to get a repair manual to have a go at getting at the contacts to give ithem clean.

I have tried pouring a little methlated spirit in the command dial opening - with the battery out and holding it at an angle to prevent the meth going right through the camera. This hasn't changed the condition.

Good luck

Hi, I have a Nikon d50. My skills are very poor and I haven't used the camera in 4months. My problem is the picture veiwer is not on and i need to look thur the veiw rather than looking at the screen. Help

Digital SLR cameras are different from other point and shoot cameras, in that you have to look through the view finder, you can not use the LCD Display to frame your shot.

Hope this helps

Nikon D50 LCD Display does not work

NatD, The D50 and indeed most SLR digital cameras [ I have a D40 ] does not allow you to take pictures using the LCD display ... this is by design, you are meant to use the viewfinder and the image you see through it is straight through the lens via a mirror block [ called a reflex pentamirror or prism ]. When the mirror is down such that you can see the image in the viewfinder it is obscuring the sensor [ the bit that takes the picture ] and when you take a shot the mirror lifts and the picture is recorded. Its this reason that DSLR's dont use the LCD to shoot, however there are a few now available that do let you do this, such as olympus, new panasonic one and higher end Nikon and Canon cameras. Hope this explains it without getting too detailed!

No picture in the image screen

I suspect that you're looking for a "live view", like in the point & shoot cameras. Most DSLRs (like the Nikon D50) don't have live view. In other words, in order to see the picture you must take it first.

Try resetting all folders in the camera to default setting or erasing any existing folders in the camera, then insert your card.

Display overlaying pictures on LCD screen

Hi, the only thing I can see in the manual is on page 52 (below). You can scroll through the information provided using the up & down arrow keys on the multi-selector button. Scrolling though to the basic file info should give a clearer view. Perhaps if you select this option the next time you view it will default to it? I don't have the camera to try! Please update the question & let us know if the information given was useful to you - Good Luck!

Nikon D50 Lens won't work

I have a D50 as well but never experienced this problem. One thing to check as you already mentioned are the metal connections between the lens and the camera body. Make sure they're clean and shiny. Another thing to try would be switching between AF and MF modes on the lens itself.

Displays pictures remaining with power off

I'm not sure what exactly your question is but this sounds normal. My D50 does the exact same thing. It displays the number of frames left on the LCD on top of the body when a card is in, and an 'E' when it is not, even when the camera is powered off. The only way to comepetely turn this LCD off is to remove the battery from the camera.
