Binds up kepp getting slower and slower then bound up tight no lint and machin clean bobbin workes good 9 months old motor runs good just will not turn over any help appreciated every thing inside seems ok have service manual no t any thing in it about this thankyou

ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the top thread from the beginning!!!

Avoid attempting to run the motor if the machine is bound--it may damage the motor.

Remove the presser foot and, if you can, remove the needle. Then remove the needle plate, the bobbincase, and the hook. If you are unable to remove some of them, you may need to use a small pair of scissors to snip the threads and gently pull them out with needlenose pliers or tweezers.

Once you have the thread tangle removed, clean with a soft brush to remove all the lint and thread bits and place a drop of good quality sewing machine oil (preferably Bernina oil for your machine) on the bobbin race. Install a brand new needle (in case the old one was damaged).. RAISE the presser foot, remove all the thread, and rethread from the very beginning. (The raised presser foot releases the tension disks so the thread will seat properly.) Use good quality thread--avoid old or bargain bin thread (some Berninas object strenuously to Coats & Clark thread too). Some threads create heavy lint buildup in the tension disks and bobbin area in addition to hanging up in the needle and elsewhere. Also, some fabrics shed more (ie fleece), so be sure to clean often. Try to oil your machine as instructed in the owner's manual--every time you change a bobbin, after 8 hours of constant sewing, or every 6 months if not in regular use.

There may be a small bit of thread or lint caught somewhere in the bobbin case or bobbin holder. Brush lint away from the feed dog area, being careful not to brush lint into the workings of your machine. If you have the manual, look up how to clean lint from the bobbin. If you don't have the manual, try just taking the hook out, if possible. Run a clean toothpick around the housing and then use a clean small brush to brush out any lint or thread pieces. Put one drop of sewing machine oil on the hook of the bobbin housing. Then use a thread to "floss" your bobbin case. Run a thread through the slot and wiggle back and forth to loosen any caught thread bits. Good luck. ps If this doesn't work, repeat. Sometimes after you turn the hand wheel a bit, another piece of thread or lint will work loose and can be cleaned.

Remove the bobbin and look for bound up thread in and around the bobbin area. Another thing to check is if the motor still works.

Hi. It's very likely that you need to give it a really good cleaning and oiling. Take the bobbin case out and the needle plate off and brush out all the old lint and pieces of thread. Clean the tension disks on the upper tension assembly. I find unwaxed dental floss is good to use on the disks. Consult your manual for the oiling points, but a good rule of thumb is one drop of oil whenever metal moves against metal--and use sewing machine oil, not 3-n-1 or WD-40.

If the machine is bound up, the first thing to look for is a small peice of thread in the bobbin shuttle. Take the bobbin out lay the machine back and look very clos and 9 out of 10 times there will be a very small strand of thread in it. Now your going to look at it and say nope, no thread. Look again, it will surprise you how one small strand can bind the whole thing up.

Sounds like you need to adjust the tension. Probably a good idea to oil this older machine before you adjust. Also look for and clean out any lint or debris in bobbin case and around foot area.

Hello. The 158.19141 is probably the best Kenmore sewing machine around. I use two of this same model in my sewing/alterations business and they have been totally dependable. (I also have 3 vintage Kenmore computerized machines) but the 158.19141 is my favorite model. The problem sounds as though there is dust/dirt/lint in some of the parts in the machine. Take off the feedplate, vacuum and or use a lint brush to loosen any threads and lint. Take out the bobbin case and bobbin: inspect for lint and dust. Take out the bobbin shuttle (which tends to make the threads bunch if it has lint build up). Clean or vacuum, PUT A DROP OF OIL ON THE CENTER PIN, and replace.

Oil the machine regularly. If it has sat around for months without use, it may tend to get sluggish.

Make sure your feeddogs are UP. Use an appropriate size needle for your fabric and make sure it is set properly. The flat side of the needle has to be facing to the north of the machine; and make sure the needle is inserted entirely up and tightly into the needlebar.

Threading the machine properly and inserting the bobbin correctly is usually the answer to most frustrations with a machine. Good luck...and lucky you to have the Kenmore 158.1914 model.
