Question about MP3 & Digital Media Players

Open Question

Dell DJ Jukebox, 20GB, 2nd generation, powers on but screen is blank. Did this once before and resetting it fixed it, but now it does not. Battery seems okay, so I'm wondering if it's a hard drive, or software failure. Buttons are bright, screen is bright... just blank. Thanks, Chuck

Problem fixed, for the time being anyway. I dropped it and it started working, so I figure the hard drive was stuck. This also makes me think the hard drive is on it's last legs so, does anyone know where new hard drives can be obtained? Also, would I need to remove the scroll wheel before removing the ends, so I can slide the unit out of it's case safely? If so, does the scroll wheel itself have to be pried out, or does the wheel holder come out as one piece?

    Thanks for any help available....

SOURCE: Dell Digital Jukebox and Vista

In case there are still people like me out there who are having trouble getting Dell DJ to work with Vista, here's what worked for me: I went to the Dell.com support page for Dell DJ Gen 2 and downloaded this driver: 1.02.03 Driver for Dell DJ (Gen 2) / Pocket DJ. It downloaded as R88925.exe. Once I ran that executable and then ran setup from its destination folder, I connected the Dell DJ and had to direct Vista to look for the driver in C:/Program Files/Dell/Digital Jukebox Drivers. After that, it worked fine.

I think I have something for you. On the back of the player you will notice a Service Tag number. Just check out this site: http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&cat=sup&k=jukebox&rpp=12&p=1&subcat=dyd&rf=all&nk=f&sort=K&ira=False&spf=Dell+Digital+Music+Player&~srd=False&ipsys=False&advsrch=False&~ck=bt and enter in the Service Tag number that you find into the form on this page. After doing so you will receive all the downloads necessary for your player to work.

Dell Digital Jukebox

The solution to many random problems is to simply reset your Dell DJ. This can be done by using a small, thin object (such as the tip of an ink pen) to press the reset button that is on the bottom-left side of the DJ. -or- Hold down the play/pause button while it's off, insert a paperclip into the reset button, take it out, and then let go of the play/pause. The DJ should open to a rescue mode, then run disc clean-up.

Dell Digital Jukebox and microsoft vista

I think my trusty DELL DJ (now coming up on five years old!!) will sadly be replaced as my main mp3 player sometime this year... I love it, but no drivers!!! Perhaps I can find a way to use it as an external/portable hard/flash drive.

Dell DJ (Generation 2) not being recognized by computer

Found the answer on Dell Forums. A lot of Dell DJ folks have been having the same issues. The problem is with Windows Media Player (shock). The Windows driver dated 2006 is installing itself and taking over, not allowing Dell's 2005 driver to work. The bottom line is the DJ will dock but not be recognized by your computer, Windows Media Player, or Yahoo Music Jukebox.

To check to see if this is the issue dock your DJ then click on start, right click on my computer, and then hit properties. Click on hardware tab and go to device manager. Look for portable devices on the list. You will likely see your DJ with a yellow (!) next to it. Right click on the DJ and hit properties again, then look in the driver tab to see what driver is listed. If you see a driver with the date 2006 or newer, then Windows is screwing you up.

The only way I've found to fix this is to either uninstall Windows Media Player or go back to an old enough version that the 2006 driver is not in the system. The 2006 driver is from Microsoft and somehow it interfers with the proper driver, which is from Dell and should be dated either 2004 or 2005. Once Windows is uninstalled completely, or back to an old enough version that you are safe (I am not sure how far back you must go, I just uninstalled the darn thing completely), you need to uninstall the Dell driver then go to Dell's website and reinstall the latest. Also make sure you have the latest firmware.

It sounds like a lot of work but it honestly took me longer to type this note that to do it and I don't have a clue what I'm doing. It's better than throwing away your DJ. From the comments I saw on the Dell Forum, Dell is not aware of the issue and isn't much help. Many people spent hours on the phone with Dell support only to hit a dead end and get the recommendation to replace the device.

Hope this helps all. A huge thank you to the folks over all Dell Forum who figured out the solution despite Dell's technical assistance.

First Gen Dell DJ 20 Gig "File Cannot Be Written" Transfer Issue

Yahoo jukebox was bought out by Rhapsody. I had the same problem and their only solution was for me to buy a Rhapsody subscription. I know this is not the solution you want to hear but that seems to be the only way to keep any music that was stored using the yahoo jukebox.
