Is the center prong Ground? If so can I assume that the center wire, which is smaller than the other two, is the ground wire?

Use an ohm meter. Ohm out (check for continuity) from the wire ends to the prongs.

The black and white leads have no polarity, they can be hooked up either way. The green grounds to the cabinet

Kenmore 700 dryer with a three prong cord is being converted to four prong. Is there a drawing of what wires by color going to the proper screw location?

There's a ground strap wire (green/yellow) attached to the dryer cabinet and connected to the center terminal where the white neutral wire of the power cord is connected. Disconnect this ground strap wire and remove the 3-prong power cord from the terminal block taking note where the wires are connecedt to. Connect the 4-prong power cord in the same way same wire colors of the 3-prong cord are connected to the terminal block. Connect the ground strap wire to the remaining fourth wire (green/yellow). Just do the reverse when converting 4-prong to 3-prong. The link below might enlighten you further on this matter.

Kenmore dryer 3prong cord installation diagram

if its a" flat cord" what-ever color jacketed 3 wire cord, the 2 outside wires are your 2 hot power wires they go to L1 and L2 on your dryer, the center is the N neutral wire and goes to the N terminal, usually the L1 and L2 are a gauge larger than the neutral: HINT: the center is normally neutral on both the cord and machines terminal board in the back of the dryer, there usually is a diagram on the dryer on how to install the input power at the place you hook up power

I have a 3 prong to change to a 4 prong cord on my dryer

The following link explains how to correctly install a 220VAC appliance cord to your dryer:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3575913-installing_a_220_vac_appliance_cord

Read through the instructions provided and let me know if you have questions. This advice is how to convert from a 3 prong to a 4 prong appliance cord. You simply match the corresponding colors of the wires on the cord you intend to attach to the matching colors at the terminal block on the back of the dryer. If the wires are not color coded at the terminal block, the outer two wires (left and right) are the HOT leads, the center wire is the Neutral. Make sure the neutral ad ground wires remain independent of each other in a 4 wire configuration. The green wire should be terminated on a ground lug on the equipment cabinet while the neutral is terminated at the terminal block.

Let me know if you require further assistance. I hope this help you.

I need to change out my 3 prong dryer power cord with a 4 prong dryer cord, but unable to figure out where the wires go on the new 4 prong power cord, because the one on there is grey and not color coded...

Changing from 3 to 4 wire hookup on a electric dryer:
Power cord help for 3 & 4 prong dryer cords
This is an example of a three wire connection dryer cord hookup. Notice that there is a ground strap connected from the common center terminal to the frame of the terminal block. Place the center wire of the cord on the center terminal [ one with the ground ******** it ] and the other two wires will be placed on the outer terminals and it doesn't matter which wire goes right or left. Get the center wire of the cord right and you are in business.
This is an example of the 4 wire dryer cord hookup. Notice that the ground strap has been removed from the terminal block frame and folded back onto the center terminal for storage. You can see the colors of the other hookups. TIP: White always to the middle.

Need to change power cord on maytag dryer from 3 prong to 4

Always disconnect electricity before beginning this process.

All the 4 wire cords I have seen are color-coded. The white wire goes to the middle terminal, the green wire goes to any screw you can reach that goes into the metal case of the dyer. The red and black go to the outside terminals of the block and while it doesn't matter which color goes to which terminal I usually follow the color code of the interior dryer wiring that already exists. Good Luck.

Positive side of Non-colord power cord

body { background: #FFFFFF; margin: 0px; padding: 4px; font-family: arial, verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; } p { margin:0px; padding:0px; } .spwrap { background: transparent url(../wysiwyg_rte_2/misspell.gif) repeat-x scroll center bottom; } The following link explains how to correctly install power cord on your appliance:

If the wires on the power are not color coded, the two outer wires are your hot leads. The colors are not representative of positive and negative. RED and BLACK are both HOT (120VAC) lines. Connect one to the RED wire and the other to the BLACK wire at the terminal block. The center wire on a 3-prong plug is your neutral (WHITE - non voltage carrying line) wire at the terminal block. For a three prong configuration, you should also have a grounding strap connected to the neutral which is attached to the appliance frame.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.
