I want to install a D-LinkDPR-1260 Print Server into my verizon modem/wireless router network which uses a HP pavillion Dv6700 Laptop w/built in wireless connectability and MS windows Vista operating system. Before I attempt installation, will this server work w/vista, the laptop itemized above, and a Lexmark X2580 USB printer/scanner?? Are there any special things I need to know as I install ?

    I'm mostly a computer novice, but won't I need a ethernet cable between server and router at least during the install time?

1) Go to START (or that circle thing) -> Control Panel
-> Hardware & sound -> Printer.

2) from Printer page -> click on Add a Printer.

3) From here, choose to add a local printer

4) Choose create new port and select Standard TCP/IP from the list -> next

5) First option leave it as Autodetect,
Host name IP and PORT are both your:
DLINKPS-XXXXXX or DSLINK-XXXXXX (depends on which firmware version)
keep the box checked. -> then next

WAIT a little for detection

6) Choose Custom and then click on Settings.

leave the port and ip as is.
-Protocol = LPR
LPR Setting = (check your dlinkps-xxxxxx, is under LPR Queue Name, there's no default for this one because is different between printers -differ between your two printers, better check first)
- Do not enable SNMP.
-> ok

from here, click next

The following screen, just choose your printer brand and model from the list, this is where you install your driver.

-> next

do a test print and DONE.

Yes if I understood it correctly you connect the printer to the print server.

  • Ekse Oct 28, 2008

    Heres the manual incase you need it

    ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Printserver/dpr1260/Manual/dpr1260_manual_112.zip

    the installation steps are documented there.

    Il write them up for you anyway.

    1. Confirm proper operation of your printer before connecting the DPR-1260.
    2. When you have confirmed proper operation of your USB printer, turn your printer power OFF.
    3. Confirm that your network is operating normally.
    4. Connect the DPR-1260 to your network, using a straight-through CAT5 cable. It is required that an Ethernet cable is used during initial setup. Once your wireless configuration is set, you may disconnect the Ethernet cable and begin communicating wirelessly with your DPR-1260.
    5. While the printer is powered OFF, use the USB printer cable to connect the DPR-1260 to your USB printer.
    6. Switch ON your USB printer.
    7. Plug the DC power adapter into the DC 5V power socket on the rear panel of the Print Server.
    8. Plug the power adapter into a power outlet. This will supply power to the DPR-1260, as it has no external power switch. The green Power LED on the Print Server’s front panel should illuminate steadily, and the Print Server’s
    Self-Test will proceed.

Wireless connection with a wireless router (Netgear WNDR 4000) a pc and a laptop.

I assume you connect your printer to the desktop with the USB cable.
I assume the laptop is connected to the Wifi network.

First you need to setup the printer to connect to the wireless network. Follow the printer installation instructions to do that.
Next insert the install Disc into the laptop and follow the installation instructions. Use the network installation section.

The printer has a built-in server for printing.
If UPNP is enabled on the router then you should be able to browse the printer on the network.

Need my laptop to communicate wireless to printer

If the printer does not have a built-in network card/print server then there is a couple of ways to do this.
If you have a desktop computer connected to the wireless router with a LAN cable, then connect the printer to the desktop computer and make this printer a shared printer on your network. This means that the desktop computer and printer needs to be on when you want to print from the laptop.
The other way is to purchase a print server, connect the printer to the print server and connect the print server with a LAN cable to the Wireless router.
If you don't have sufficient network ports on the wireless router then you need to purchase a hub. Then connect the hub and wireless router with a LAN cable and then the print server to the hub and other computers to the hub.
Setting up the wireless printing will depend upon which method you want to adopt and I can advise you when further when you are ready.

Can you see the print server from your laptop? You should be able to find it in Network Neighborhood it should be listed as http://dlinkps-XXXXXX where xxxxxx is the last 6 digits of the mac address printed on the label on the print server. Open a browser and enter http://dlinkps-XXXXXX and you should be connected to the print server web interface.

Can't connect a Dlink 1260 Print server through my Linksys wireless G router

A couple of things to check for:

  • If the wireless network is encrypted on your router verify that you have the right encryption key programmed on the print server
  • You are connecting to the corret router (Verify the SSID of the network - SSID being the networks name)
  • Make sure you are in an acceptable range , not 500 feet away from the router
  • Verify that the print server has a connection to the printers connected to it
  • Try rebooting all of the equipment (router , server, printers)

DPR-1260 ... prints but cannot access web config page

To get into the web configuration you need to know your firmware on the DPR-1260. If it is 1.12, us http://dlinkps-xxxxxx where the X's are the last 6 number of the mac address. If it is 1.20 and up, use http://dlink-xxxxxx, where the x's are the last 6 number of the mac address. If you do set it up as DHCP or static and know the ip address of the print server just type in the ip address of the print server on the address bar.
