Cannot access any programs on Toshiba Satellite A135-S4517

When i turn on my laptop it will run up to the welcome screen then the screen turns lack and the hard disk light goesoff and it goes no further. Sometimes I will get to the window with icons but when I try to get into any program, ie MS Word, Excel, Outlook, nothing happens and the hard drive does not light up. Also on the bottom lefthad side of screen, all of my start-up icons are not showing, ie, my virus protection icon, network connection icon, etc. When I right click on start to get into my explore files, nothing happens - it says it is inaccessable and stops. But I am able to get out on the internet through Mozilla Foxfire, my MS internet Expolrer is not working either. I click on the MS Internet Explorer icon and it times out. Right now as I am writing this my harddrive light is working sometimes. Help!

Either a tune up, or it has a faulty hard drive. If you can manage to get to My Computer, right click your C: drive, select Properties, go to the Tools tab and click Check For Errors. Check all the options, and start it. It will tell you that the tests can only proceed when you reboot. Check it in order to do so and reboot.
Good luck.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527 and it will not turn on. I checked the AC adapter and I am getting 19 Volts and my laptop shows that i have power going to the laptop but yet it will not turn on.

Welcome to Fixya.

It seems like you are experiencing a "No power/no post" issue on your laptop, here are my recommendations :
  • Disconnect everything attached to your laptop (USB cables, etc)
  • Disconnect the ac adapter
  • Carefully remove the laptop's battery
  • Press and hold down on the power button for at least 10 seconds
  • Connect the ac adapter to laptop without the battery and turn it on
  • If this works, return the battery to the laptop and try it again with the ac adapter
If none of the above procedure works, then the laptop needs to be serviced. I've included Toshiba's support contacts below for your further reference :

Hope this helps and Thanks for using Fixya.

My Laptop Toshiba satellite a135-2386

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Classic View
Click Add/Remove Programs
Select Windows Defender
Click to "remove" it
Restart your computer
Download from http://www.microsoft.com/antispyware
and install the latest version, and let it update.

If it still happens, you may have a computer-virus that is "disabling" Windows Defender everytime you restart.

if unable to turn on the screen just lights flashing
RAM is faulty try replacing it , if u have two chips try installing one by one see if it helps

or

if it shows some text on screen and try to boot and u can access bios then

ur OS has corrupted two reasons for that

1. due to virus, malware spyware, etc
2. Hard Disk is getting weak wants replacement

solution first try to re install the OS if u find it difficult to do so then my friend ur hard disk needs replacement

factory reset procedure

Toshiba: BEFORE TURNING ON THE LAPTOP, press and hold the 0 (zero) button on the keyboard, then turn on the computer while holding the 0 (zero) button down. When the Toshiba logo screen appears, you can release the 0 key.

pls rate me FIXYA if i fixed ur problem

External HDD

The answers are maybe, and yes.

If your internal hard drive is nearly full then adding an external hdd and transfering some of the files to it will free up space on your internal hdd and potentially improve performance.

You can install programs and store files on the external hdd. Obviously it will need to be connected in order to run these programs and access the files.
