How do I reset the error message on my brother 5520?

Mine is HP 5520 so I don't think that I can help, but one thought - have you used a genuine cartridge, not a refill? I think the makers are precious about their goods and the machine "objects" on their behalf to anything other than the standard product. I will be interested to know your solution. Faye

1. Press GO. The page containing the error will automatically be reprinted. 2. Turn the printer off and then on. 3. Reseat cables to the laser/ scanner and engine controller. Or in Add/remove uninstall the application, Then let the plug&play search for it, then in properties update driver

Copy function was not working, says "device is busy". Message appeared on the printer screen is:"scanner error 5, turn off then on". This was done several times and message still appeared. I called 866-625-1176 and was connected with HP Technical Support and after 20 - 25 minutes of diagnostics, the technician informed me that they were sending me a new printer at no charge. I assume this meant that HP is aware of the defect and has no solution other than to replace it. The printer was only 6 months old.

Parts are probably not available except for modules.

I would say the scanner assy is toast.

Scanner not working

A6 is a scan failure detection.

This sounds to me like the motor running the scanner is not working. However, there are three or four causes of this error. The home position sensor, the motor, the CCD, the main board and the engine board.

You should be able to find the sensor that detects the scanner lid. Fool it with a piece of tape or a finger. Look at the scanner after pressing copy to see what is happening.
You could open up the scanner and check the movement to make sure it's smoth, but this is a lot of work. The best option is to pick up a used scanner from a Brother service centre. Install it and see if it solves your problem. Of course, you wouldn't be able to return it if it did not solve the fault. This is why Brother recommended you take it to a service centre, the troubleshooting is very in-depth for a fault of this nature.

I'm not that familiar with your model, however, the ##324 error is a scanner failure. On some of the Canon models, there is a provision in the menu for re-calibrating the scanner. You try this but I can't guarantee it will fix your problem. If I'm thinking right, your model corresponds to the Hp LaserJet 3100 series (but then again, why should I start thinking right now?). They where notorious for that problem. You'll need a blank sheet of white paper, look through the menu to find "calibrate scanner". I'm still trying to find more information on this, but I don't have it yet Hope it helps Ed
