Question about Sewing Machines

Open Question

My Bernina 1130s only sews in reverse.

My machine only sews backwards, it doesn't matter if I push the reverse button or not, it's stuck in reverse. How do I fix it? Can I fix it?

SOURCE: Viking Husqvarna model 6440 gets stuck in reverse

There are numerous things that can cause this, some very simple, some less so.
1. Fortunatly, the most common one is also the simplest to cure. When you turn the selector (upper left) knob between stitches, one of the things that is happening when you feel the resistance is that it is lifting the followers off the camstack so that it can move to another stitch. When the camstack is normally doing its job, lifting the feed cam follower is what puts the mechanism in reverse. So, while the selector is between stitches, the machine is temporarily in reverse. Also, the dots where the dial is to be placed to change the camstacks is between stitches, so if the dial is on these dots or anywhere else except snapped into a stitch, you will get nothing but reverse.
2. The buttonhole mechanism is stuck in the reverse portion of the buttonhole. Usually if this is the case, the needle position will also be stuck on the left side, and the width control /buttonhole control will not function correctly. Usually you can correct this yourself and I'll explain how in a bit. It is usually caused by lack of use of the buttonhole mechanism.
3. Either the arm that connects the camstack to the stitch length block or the block itself is stuck. Both these parts are spring loadedto bring them in the forward position, so long periods of rest are a contributing factor.
All of these causes except for the first one are because of the mechanism not being exercised frequently enough. These older Vikings do not like to sit still very longYou should fully exercise all the knobs at every sitting.
Ok, try this fix. And this is to free up the mechanisms that are probaby stuck from non use and old oil and grime buildup. Take your seamformer (cam) out of the back. Find a hairdryer and blow some heat in there for awhile. This will soften up any hard oil or grease that may be causing the mechanisms to stick. Then if you can it would be best to have what is called TRI-FLOW oil (the BEST) and spray or drop quite a bit into there covering the mechanisms and let it soak in. You might try a good sewing machine oil soaking or WD-40 in small amounts. Little by little test your knobs, slowly working whatever is stuck lose. Never force the issue. Small amounts of movement little by little will eventually free it up.
Good luck. Hope this helps. If this does not help you may have to take it to a technician and hopefully you won't find out that your take up slide isn't broken which is a major job.

SOURCE: Machine sews only in reverse

Be sure you are in the correct stitch pattern...if you are on a buttonhole stitch or a stretch stitch it normal for the machine to sew backwards. Be sure your length is to the right of 0 and not in a strtch stitch model or buttonhole mode.

What is the brand of your machine? If it's a Bernina, sounds like the basting mechanism is stuck. A Bernina tech can release that for you.

What would cause my Bernina 1230 to only sew backwards?

Hmmm, not sure I can answer your problem. I have several Berninas (older than your 1230) but have not had this problem. Wondering if your machine needs oiling--like maybe the reverse mechanism is stuck. With mechanical machines, I've been able to loosen stuck parts using heat from a handheld hair dryer. Not sure that would work on your machine.

Feed dogs pushing fabric in reverse

Check that the quick reverse button is not jammed-in, first. If not, check a pattern that uses forward and backward feed, such as the honeycomb stitch and check if varying the stitch length makes any difference - if its still only feeding in a reverse direction, you're probably going to have to get it checked-out by a Bernina service agent, because this could be one of a number of problems, ranging from the simplest - the plug carrying the wiring to the stitch length stepper motor might have dropped-off the main 'S'-print control board - to the worst - the main control board might be faulty. The stepper motor could also be faulty or, indeed, there might be a jammed stitch-length mechanism in the free-arm, if it hasn't been serviced for a while. Good Luck

The stitch length control is moved upwards, beyond the 'zero' position to make it sew backwards. To demonstrate, with the machine off, adjust the stitch length to '2' using the knob on the stitch-length lever. Now push the lever upwards until it stops - it will go past the zero position and this is now in reverse mode.

My bernina patchwork 140 will not sew in reverse when I press the reverse button has the button gone bad the button hole won't sew ithe back stitch either?

Some machines will not do any of their automatic forwards and backwards movement type stitches in reverse, are you trying to reverse in straight stitch or a more complex stitch.

The Activa is a late model quality machine, do you have a Bernina dealer locally you could ring up and ask or take it to?

My Bernina is sewing backwards and driving me up the wall!!!! What can I do?

Depending on which Bernina you have, check the manual for "continuous reverse." If I remember correctly you either had to press the reverse button twice in succession or you could set it on your screen to do it. Hope this helps.

Bernina 1090 only sewing backwards

1.Turn the bobbin winder off.
2.You have to reverse the wires on the carbon brushes.

3.Make sure that you have the needle in correctly- with the flat side to the back. Those machines rarely go out of time.

Bernina Buttonhole foot #3A

Hi, you must have an 1130S which means it could also be a circuitboard issue. If the LED/LCD light for the buttonholer does not flash you either need a new RET-Print (circuitboard) or a new buttonhole foot. Sorry to say that you DO more than likely need a new buttonhole foot according to my manual on this machine. No way to repair the foot that I know of.
You should bring the machine in and try it first.
Guess not all news is good news. Sorry.
