Thanks. I had found his video already. The belt had actually not broken on my machine - but the inner gear had become wound with hair so that the serpentine belt would no longer work. The belt itself contains Kevlar and is virtually indestructible, and so the machine design does not include any easy way to get at the inside gear, or change the belt. The machine literally has to be entirely disassembled. A removable panel over the gear is all that it would take in the design to resolve this shortcoming.

In spite of that, however, the Neato beats Roomba vacuums by a landslide when it comes to maintenance. I have had several Roombas (which easily become clogged and require constant cleaning and maintenance) but only one Neato, which required a minor cleanup of the easy to clear brush every couple of months. Also, the Neato battery life is far far superior to the Neato. I have had the Neato for a year with no reduction in battery capacity. The Roomba requires a new battery (at $70) every 8 months to 1 year.

I can live with digging at the inner belt gear once a year. The Neato is still by far the best design in robot vacuums in my experience.

You can buy the belt from Robotshop at $20 plus some expensive S&H. Not a great deal but better than returning the robot for service. Replacing it is not exactly a breeze but it's doable. The real difficulty is in re-assembling the top cover with all the bumpers and sensors in place. I agree with your assessment of the Neato, after using mine for a year I have stopped calling my Roombas "robots", they are just bouncing motorized vaccum cleaners. You have to have some level of awareness to qualify as a robot.

Change a belt

You did not state your model or make so I can't explain how to change your model but most vacuums you must remove the bottom plate held on by screws that covers the brush roll, remove the brush roll and belt and reverse the process with the new belt. Some models have the brush roll held in by screws and/or brackets, some brush rolls slide down into slots. Replace the brush roll if the bristles are worn or frayed. If you are not replacing the brush roll remove the endcaps if possible and clear any hair or debris that has worked it's way in there.
Cogged belts are different from stretch belts and do not need to be replaced at least once per year like stretch belts do. You should still remove the brush roll at least once or twice per year to clean out debris. Maybe more often if it gets hair or strings wrapped around it which can build up causing friction and heat which can melt or damage the brush roll or even the nozzle housing.

How do I replace the belt for this model

Make sure vacuum is not plugged in to power outlet. Lay it upside down and remove 4 screws from bottom plate covering brush roll. Remove bottom plate and pull the brush roll out. Clean hair and debris from brush roll and make sure it spins freely. Remove end caps from brush roll if possible and clean debris out. Install new belt around motor shaft then insert brush roll into belt and pull on brush roll to give you enough leverage to stretch belt far enough to put. Brush roll back into position. Reinstall bottom plate and screws. Make sure brush roll will turn before turning vacuum back on. Belt will lose elasticity and should be replaced twice a year.

Brush won't spin on hoover wind tunnel bag less upright when on carpet, belts are fine

The belts may look fine but may be stretched and worn. Replace them. Make sure brush spins free. Idler pulley should tighten belt tension when handle is released

HOW TO CANGE BELT ON SIMPLICITY 9.8 VACUUM

This is pretty easy. Turn vac upside down, remove brush cover, brush with belt on it pops out on each side. You must get the exact replacement belt so take your model number and any other numbers to vacuum repair shop. The belt around brush then around motor spindle, replace brush and cover.

Belt replace panasonic vac

Is it an upright? On mine it's very simple.
Unplug vacuum and lay it on floor so that you are looking at the rotating brush. Remove screws that attach the cowling. Remove the cowling. You will then see the rotating brush ends. One end will have the belt, or what's left of on the brush wheel. You will also see the motor shaft. The belt goes between the shaft and the brush wheel. Carefully remove the brush by holding both ends and pulling straight out. Place the new belt on the brush wheel and replace the brush. With the belt on the brush wheel, stretch it to fit on the motor shaft. Rotate the brush to make sure the belt is riding correctly at both ends. Replace cowling and screws.

Brush froze up and keeps breaking belts

I had the same problem but I found that I had replaced belt incorrectly. After placing one end of belt around pully, it has to be run behind the "belt disengager" which looks like a 1/2" wide metal tab just past pulley. After placing belt correctly I had no more belt, burning smell or brush problems.

Main Brush Failure

first check if the brush motor is turning before you spend money on a new brush roller and belt. remove the belt by unscrewing the screws holding the brush cover ( the part touching the floor ) and slip the belt of the rotor. turn the vacuum on, and the brush on while the vacuum is in a reclined position. if the motor is not moving, you need a new motor.

Belt Stretched on my Hoover Windtunnel Farrington upright model U6431-900

hi, In order to to replace the V belt the one that turns the brush, One must take off the bigger belt " drive belt" that goes over that hugh wheel towards the back. When a belt gets stretched they will not turn the brush very well. If you have bought replacement belts the bigger belt Drive comes 2 in a package. Then you have your little V belt that helps turn your roller brush over. Yes the belts don't last long on my hoover. For kpatr22101 When you rpelace that V belt it goes over the roller brush into a little groove on the brush and then over a plastic round wheel then you must put on that bigger drive belt that must fit over that hugh wheel towards back and smaller on in front. Yes it is hard to get on. the I hope this helps. Cindy G.
