Exactly the same problem.  what is a faulty power brick?

  • CieloYLluvia Nov 25, 2008

Same problem. My CD is connected to a G5, both purchased in 2005. When it was under Apple Care, they replaced the power brick (90w). This time, I purchased a new 150 W power brick on my own dime, and it still is dead. Sometimes it comes up, but with no rhyme or reason. I've tried all kinds of cable connect variations and zapped my prams. Still not working. :(

it's quite strange that so many people have the same problem, since end of september... could this be related to mac os x 10.5.5? could this be related to a new product named Apple LED Cinema Display? i have a strong supsicion, that apple wants me to switch to a new display...

I've got the same problem, as of today. It is the second monitor connected to my system. Switched the monitors to the other ports and it's definitely the monitor, not the card.

It started out intermittently the other day. Wouldn't wake from sleep. Would have to restart. Then restart wouldn't work. Had to power all the way down and start it up again. Now nothing works. Disconnect it. Unplug it. Nothing.

Blinking light on Apple cinema display usually indicates insufficient power from the power supply. Test it with another power supply from ANY cinema display (23" and 27" power supplies are ok to test with).

Hello!

Please do and verify any fuse blownout in the inlet of the power from the wall, if it is not visible then maybe you open the the back cover and try to see any parts that has error or blown. you should replace it with genuine replacement parts. however it hard to do this by a novice tech, My suggestion is to bring the unit to the nearest service center maybe the unit got warranty service or else maybe its a cheap or resonable cost.

may this help!

best regards, melnavz

My 23" Apple cinema display (2002) has black screen and code flashes three short flashes. How do I find out if the monitor is dead or the power supply?

The only way to test is to use a known working power supply or known working cinema display with the parts you already have.

Apple Cinema Display 23" LED short-long-short flash prob.

Hello, I had the "short long short" blinking led problem with my 23" ACD after a power outage which left my screen blank and my cheek wet with a tear for my baby. I read somewhere that a guy was getting a 1 volt reading on the middle pin of his damaged 90 watt power block. I figured maybe the display might work if I could somehow block the middle pin. So I cut a small strip of paper wide enough to block just the middle pin and long enough to cover both sides, folded it to look like a "W" from the side. I then carefully pressed it into the brick receptacle with a toothpick leaving just a little slack so it would not tear when I pushed in the small white plug. It was a bit of a tight fit but guess what. IT WORKED! I am now enjoying my beloved monitor anew and saved $$$ on replacement brick or repair. If you want to try it and you feel you’ve nothing to lose, make sure you cover just the middle pin (both sides) and you may have to try a couple of times. It worked for me. I hope you have good luck too. Regards, Moozler

edit December 2016. Still working after 7 years.

***CAVEAT AND WARNING***
Use this fix at your own risk.
A faulty voltage regulator is probably the cause of failure. Voltage regulators can start a fire if too much voltage is applied.

Bud Martin's post below describes the electronic component failure that causes this problem. Thank you Bud.

Apple 23" Cinema HD Display went off

Hey - I just got done with 30 minutes of trying my cinema HD on my macbook pro and plugging and unplugging. When I plugged it into an extension cord in another socket the monitor started right up. I've had this configuration in my office for years with no problem...until today. Did mac send us a system upgrade that caused a problem with the monitor's power source???? Good luck!!!!

Apple Studio Display Flashing Power Button

For the brave of heart, You can disassemble the monitor. After you get in to the inside of it, you'll see a circuit panel with 6 ballast coils on it. On my Cinema display, what happened was that the solder joints on some of those coils had cracked, causing intermittent connection. After hitting all the connections with a soldering iron to heal the cold solder joints and re-assembling it, it is working perfectly fine now.
