There are 3 thing you can check. The heating element, thermostat and thermal fuse. All 3 should be together. Depending on you dryer u can access then by removing the back panel or the front. You can use a multi meter on the continuity option to test. You should have continuity in each.

My dryer wont heat

Not sure of my brand, but when my dryer would continue to run without heating, I replaced one small fuse in the back using Google to find the right part (What Causes Gas Dryer to Stop Heating) and a youtube video to walk me through the process. Instead of a $75 maintenance visit or purchasing a new dryer, I solved the problem for $2.50.
This video worked for me, but you could search for other brands.

My dryer wont heat up or shut down

It's not heating up because the heating element is broken and should be replaced. It won't shut down because the thermostat isn't sensing heat and continues to run while expecting heat. So replacing the heating element should get it running properly.

Heater wont run on hi and doesn't get warm at all

One of two things here. You blew an internal fuse or the heating element is broken. Take your unit apart and check for bad fuses and also check that the heating coil has continuity. Let me know how you make out.

# 1 Check to see if your timer is turning as the dryer is running. If not it will need to be replaced.
# 2 You will need to verify that your heating element is coming on when the dryer is running

Water wont heat up

If your DW has an "energy saver" or "no-heat" button for wash or rinse, make sure it is not selected.  If that is not the case then the heating element is probably burned out and needs to be replaced.

Dryer still wont heat

you could remove and bench test the theromostat. my kenmore would not complete the circut to heat at all with a faulty thermostat. Just use a jumper wire to bypass it and test it THERE WILL BE NO SHUT OFF COULD HEAT UP TOO MUCH IF LEFT RUNNING.
