Try inserting the master (system) disc that came with it and hold down the "C" key while booting. If it comes on with the OS X installer, try disk utility to reset permissions, if that fails to solve it, start again and this time when you get the install disc up get to options and do archive and install. If that has no effect, get out your Apple Care ( you do have it don't you?) and take /send it to Apple.

SOURCE: No chime no fan no screen on Imac G4 17', even

Could be a problem with the logic board. If you have Applecare, take it to an Apple store and they might be able to fix it. Otherwise, it may be dead.

When it comes on it want stay on but for 5 or ten min

Turn off computer and restart and hold down the D button while it boots on. This will bring you into the diagnostic screen. Run the diagnostics to check hardware issues. If nothing comes up reboot normally and check your power profile. It is probably set to shut down or suspend after that time to save power.

Nothing happens once I type in password. I've tried rebooting, unplugging, etc. The mouse moves but it can't activate anything.

Hi there,
First off, would it be possible for you to give us a little more detail on the problem, such as, does the finder open? is your dock onscreen? does your wallpaper appear?
As far as i can see, your best bet woud be to reboot your imac with the OSX disk in. Then boot your computer and before you hear the chime hold down the C key on your keyboard. this will boot from the disk. Once it has loaded, select your language, and then go to the utilities menu at the top and find disk utility. open it and run repair disk and repair permissions.
after this, shut down and take the disk out and reboot as normal. Any change?
Hope this helps, let me know if not.

You must remove the back panel and press the pushbutton on the motherboard by the 3 leds. If that does not work then you may have the dreaded power supply or capacitor failure. Search the web and youll understand. There are some fix it web sites but if you still have applcare take it in to a apple store and they may repair or even replace the unit.

Imac g5 17 gets some power but no display

Assuming you have the model with four diagnostic LEDs, the lack of LED-3 indicates that the computer and the LCD display are NOT communicating. This LED should be ON when the computer is turned on and video signal is being generated.
The first solution is to reset the PRAM (hold command-option-P-R after the boot chime until you hear another boot chime). If video does not appear, then power down the computer and reset the SMU by pressing the SMU button ONCE ONLY. (The SMU button is located just south of the fan housing and is the button further away from the fan; the other button is a power button.) If this does not fix the video, the next step is to remove the optical drive. If this does not fix the video, put everything back together and attach an external display using the dongle supplied with the unit. If the external display fails to work, you have a logic board problem; otherwise, you have an LCD panel, inverter, or cable problem.

Sounds like you may have some permissions issues - I would suggest sticking in the OS disc that came with your iMac, restarting, and holding the "C" key when you hear the chime - this will make it boot off the CD. Once booted from it, go to Tools->Disk Utility, choose your disk, and do "Repair Permissions". Once that is done, you can quit the installer and restart. If that doesn't work, the next step I would recommend is running DiskWarrior, which is $99 - this is like an industrial permissions/hard drive directory repair disc, used by many professionals. If that doesn't solve it, you will likely have to back up your user data and do a fresh install of the OS from the discs you have. Good luck!

Reset the PRAM first. Hold down Control+Command+P+R when booting up before the chime. Let it chime three times and let go.
