Check out your pc 1st - is it old? it could be a video card problem.

Sounds like there is a heat related problem. Probably a bad solder joint somewhere. Could be hard to track and would probably cost you more money to repair and it does to purchase a replacement monitor. 17" LCDs go for around $150 these days.
