Question about Car Audio & Video

I have a kicker zx750.1 in my truck. I have 2 kicker Cvts at 2 ohms. And my amp shuts down on most low notes. My trucks batter bar drops rapidly and the amp shuts off. I don't know if it's my wiring or not enough power. I'm using 4 gauge wire, and it's grounded well. The trucks lights dim rapidly but the subs don't seem to be as powerful as the could be. The amp just cuts off then comes back on in a second or 2. Help???

If the truck is running and this occurs, it means either the alternator is not able to provide enough current or the battery itself is failing. If the truck is not running when this occurs, it is most likely the battery failing.

If you are not using a capacitor at this point, i would recommend getting a 1 or 1.5 farad cap and adding it to the system to take some of the strain off of your electrical system.

next on the agenda is your speaker wiring, the mrv-1507 runs around 900 watts at 4 ohms bridged.. your speakers (I believe) have dual voice coils, so 4 connections total, if you are running 2 of the speakers this will be 8 connections total, in order to match the impedance of the amp you will have to wire the speakers in series/parallel. if you have never done this before, it is easy and will ensure you are running the set at 4 ohms (which will make a huge difference in and of itself).

take both speakers out, you are going to want to wire the positive from one coil to the negative of the other on the same speaker. do this to both of them, this should leave you with one positive and one negative unused on each speaker. now you want to hook both of your free negatives together and run it to the negative on your amp, then repeat the process with the positives.

this is going parallel (4 ohm / 2 coils = 2ohm) and series (2ohm x 2 bridged coils = 4ohm).

now your rms on the speakers is 500 watts each, so matching them to a 900 watt or so amp should work great.

when you are installing the wire, make sure the gauge is correct for the length of run and for the wattage, also connect your power directly to the battery or to a distribution block that is capable of handling the power. in all of my installations i run 0 gauge wire from the battery to a distributor block i mount on the firewall, then i run anywhere from 2 to 6 gauge wire to the amp depending on the wattage and run length.

for your purposes, if the length of wire from the battery to the amplifier is 13 feet or less, 4 gauge wire should be fine, if it is between 13 and 20 feet, i would consider buying 2 gauge wire for the install.

you didn't mention what size your fuse is, but i am going to assume it is 90-100 amp, for a 1000 watt amp i use a 150 amp fuse. if you can find a 130 amp fuse it should work fine.

a major thing to remember when installing an amplifier is that your vehicle's charging system was never meant to accommodate large loads for an extended period of time. connecting direct to the battery, using a stiffening capacitor, and properly matching impedance will go a long way towards helping to overcome the limitations. in the future, if you decide to go all out on this project, i would recommend getting a high output alternator, a battery isolator, and a deep cycle battery for the audio equipment. this will insure that you never kill your primary battery, and that you won't run into issues down the road with your vehicle electronics.

You should definitely upgrade the power wire to the sub amp to 4 gauge -absolutely your choking your amp its starving for current-poor thing is starving !!!!!!!

How do I tune my KICKER 08ZX1000? I have the amp running to alpine type r 12 inchs at 2 ohms but I don't know where the bass boost , gain, and crossover knobs should be pointing or what one to turn up...


To start, turn the gains on your amp all the way down. Bass boost should be off (this us used if you listen to your subs at low volume, the boost will heat your amp up quick if you use at high volume). Then turn the volume on your headunit up to 3/4 full. Make sure the filter on your amp is on low pass. The crossover point should be at it's lowest too. With all these in place, you can begin turning up the gain. You will have to decide at what point to move the crossover point. Since there are different styles of music, you will have to listen to where you feel notes are "dropping off" from the music. Adjust the crossover point to your liking, but remember that subs were made to reproduce low frequencies. Hope this helps

How to bridge two l7 kickers


It depends on the end ohm load you are trying to achieve. If your amp is rated at 2 ohms stable, then wire for 2 ohms, if 1 ohm stable wire for 1 ohm. EX. A dual 2 ohm woofer can be wired with the positive of 1 coil connected to the negative of the other coil, then connect the amp to the other two open terminals. This cuts the load of that speaker down to 1 ohm. When connecting the other speaker in the same manner, the two speakers a 1 ohm each add together to produce a 2 ohm load at the amp. NOTE- a 2 ohm amp running a speaker wired for 1 ohm will not have enough resistance to limit the power coming from the amp and runs a high chance of burning the amp up.

your subs are the problem, not your amp, your wiring your subs paralelle, means dropping input ohmage, allowing your amp to over heat with minimal load, check the amp specs for running at low ohms, most hifonics amps are rated 2 ohms and higher, some however will run at 1 ohm, only on class b-a amps though.(competition) dropping ohmage will allow the amp to push more power to the voice coils, however the voice coils may not be rated for 1 ohm power, what ohmage are your coils rated at? do you have a min. of 100 amp inline fuse on your 1-0 awg wire? do you have internal fans? you can add mosfets to the amp but if you do so, you'll have to re-program your amps mother board.

Kicker zx650.4 amp turned off and on


could be a couple of things going wrong. could have overheated and shutdown to protect it. could have hand to many incoming wattage/voltage from your head unit and shutdown. could be that the ohms rating on your speakers is to low or that the speakers could have heated up and bumped the guilds and caused it to shutdown. don't know if you know how ohms works. but here is an exp. if you have and have that is rated at 4 ohm stable and that is the lostes ohm recomened for it. and you have two 4 ohm rated subs. you can run them and run them with no problem as long as you don't bridge them. run them off of the same port on the amp. when bridging them it devides the ohms in half. so 2 4ohms would become 2 ohm. 2 8ohm would become 4 ohm etc. if you are running 4 speakers in pair that are 8 ohm each the total together would be 2ohm. hope this helps. try to duplacate the conditions that was going the other day when it shut down same bass settings same song etc and see if it happens again if so try unhooking one of the speakers and try it again if it don't do it it was overloading it if it was overloading and you know its right ohms etc. send it in sorry this is so long.

I have a cvt12 kicker 400rms 2ohm, ssl 1400 watt amp, and a boss 2.0 cap. do i need a second battery for 1600 watt amp. the volts is real low even with the truck is on the highest it goes is 12.2 volts...


you shouldn't need another batter. You aren't going to be disipating that much power all of the time. Your 2 Farad capacitor will help when the amp demands a lot of current during large bass hits. Just a question though, you say you have A CVT12 which is rated at 400 ohms rms and you are driving it with a 1400 Watt amp. Does this strike you as odd?

Hello discrete01,

The Kicker model number 07CVR122 has dual 2 ohm voice coils, and can be wired for either 1 ohm or 4 ohms. Model number 07CVR124 has dual 4 ohm voice coils and can be wired for either 2 ohms or 8 ohms.

If you have the version with 2 ohm voice coils, you want to use the 2nd diagram for a final load of 4 ohms to the amp. The 1 ohm load is too low for the amp and will cause it to overheat and possibly fail. If you have the 4 ohm version, use the wiring shown in the 3rd diagram which is a perfect match for the amp.

Kickers shut off


Has nothing to do with the sub's . This is an AMP problem. Best guess is you are running at too low of an impedance. Most likely (sight unseen) you are running a 2ch AMP @ 2 ohms bridged, or if the sub's Dual voice coil you are @ 1 ohm, and most amps frown on that.

Give me some specs..

Amp make, and model.
And EXACT model # of the sub's. Give me this info, and I will tell you how to make it work.

rewire the subs-each sub you want in series=8 ohms per sub-then at the amp wire the two 8 ohm subs in parallel which brings the ohms back down to 4 ohms which is optimal for the amp and it shouldnt shut down on you any more-try that-good luck

Does two 1ohm woofer = 2 ohm


if you buy the 4 ohm subs you can drop each of them to 2 ohm and then down to 1 ohm between the two of them. going with the 2 ohm no matter how you wire them you will either get 2 ohms 4 ohms or 8 ohms. hope this helps by the way the 4 ohm solobaric and the 2 ohm are both the same price.

Kicker amp shutting off


hello my friend you should have the input signal set to 500 miliamps do not go over, another thing is that if you have good ground and the battery is good and it has the sufficient amps to push it.also the ohms of your spkrs are not too low,you need to check all that.
