Question about Asrock K7VT4A-Pro Motherboard

K7vt4a Pro and Athlon 2400+ shutdown with XP

I have setup a new system with the ASRock K7VT4A Pro and an Athlon 2400+ cpu. I have a dual boot system with Windows XP and Linux Debian Lenny. I have the annoying problem of the system shutting down and rebooting in XP. But no problems whatsoever in Linux. I even reloaded WIn98 and still no problems. I was thinking the cpu might be a problem but it doesn not shutdown in Linux or Win98. Only Xp. My dad has the same board and has a boat load of his own problems but not the shutdown. We're both reverting to Win98 until we figure why XP is such a problem on this board. (I only use Windows for games anyhow). And I've tested with the basic hardware and multiple configurations to isolate the problem and no one hardware item seemed to make a difference.

Doesn't have anything to do with the dual boot. It does the same with another hard drive with XP loaded alone. It's just reference that in Debian I don't have any performance problems. But what I do is load xp. Load the board's onboard sound drivers. Load the install for my ATI Radeon 9000. Then load a big game like my old XMen II. It will go for about 5 minutes (not the exact time just a rough estimate) Then the system just reboots. Occasionally it comes back on reboot saying the system has recovered from a serious error. It gives me a few suggestions. I have tried to isolate them with no luck (bad memory, replaced all mem chips, bad cpu, replaced cpu, bad hard drive, used multiple hard drives). Again I do not have this problem with Linux. But checking somewhere else I wonder if the 4x1 via chip drivers not being loaded has anything to do with it. I'm going to try that tonight and see if it makes a difference. Im presently testing on the hard drive with XP loaded alone.

I've also tried 2 other power supplies. 1 from an HP Pavillion and another spare. Same problem. I am almost wondering if I have problems with my cpu. I've got a second one coming to try again. That is the last thing I can think of.

which operting system did you installed first. dependent on which OS first the dual boot porcess are different.

I am assuming you installed the Windows Xp first, since it try to boot to Xp on restart.

clarify, and need little more information on how the boot menu is constructed.

A im trying to start a pc but my monitor is not startin.Asrock K7VT4A-Pro Motherboard . led red is on and my grafic card is ok

Hi, you can download a manual here: PRO

Here you also find drivers.

You may have to unzip the file before installation.
Do you use the right type of ram ??
The ram module could have a defect.
Have you insertet the cpu properly ??
You can maybe try with another AGP graphic card.
Or the card is not insertet in the slot properly.

Remove the graphic card and try to clean the contact points
on the card with a piece of paper.
I guess its just a bad connection or the card is defect.

You can read all about that red led in the manual.

not usually No.
You need to setup the Pc with an IDE drive First. Then load The Sata drivers, usually on the setup CD. ( obtained with motherboard )
Alternative, is to create a SATA/Raid boot Disk et,c.

Got k7vt4a pro need sound for vista not find it on the internet

Sorry pal but your motherboard audio device only supports winxp operating system and below. There is no device driver for it that can run windows vista. My suggestion is that buy a new audio card that will support windows vista and above.

This will probably fall on deaf ears but that trident is probably an old 3.3v card and you can only use a single "keyed" 1.5 video card in this motherboard. its also not worth risking a 3 keyed "universal" video card in this board as so i heard they sometimes try and draw 3.3v instead of just 1.5v that they are supposed to be able to step down to hence the name "universal" agp (having both 3.3v and 1.5 volt keys)

Maybe this solution will help future second hand purchasers of this motherboard since they are still out there selling to this very day.
