Question about Ruud Central System Air Conditioner

Open Question

Does the RUUD UBHA14J11SFAA air handler have a filter which needs cleaning or replacement? I change the cold air return filters regularly but have never serviced the air handler in the ten years it has been running.

SOURCE: How do I change the filter in my Ruud Achiever series

I'd look in one of 2 areas.

1. often there is a central return in the house. This is the place where the air gets pulled back to the unit and is likely very close to your thermostat. Check for a filtered louvered grill there and see if your filter is located here. If so, you can access the filter by opening the filter frame with a screwdriver or even a coin.

2. Otherwise I would expect that your filter is on the return-air side of your air handler (where the blower is) Older models have the filter actually inside the air handler in the blower compartment. Newer models may have a small separate filter door. I'd look in these areas.

hope this helps

SOURCE: air handler motor stopped working

Check the capacitor before you replace the motor. It's a common problem that's easily fixed. Make sure the fan rotates freely.

Can you see the condition of the coil itself? If it is blocked this could be a cause for the frozen coils. Also, check the condition of the blades on the indoor fan. Dirt and dust accumulation on the blades reduces airflow.

My system uses a permenant air filter. It's missing. It's a Ruud Model UBHC-21J18SHG. What size filter should I put in this system?

The Ruud UBHC-21J18SHG has a nominally 21" cabinet width. So the needed filter is 19.75" x 21" x 0.375" (502 mm x 533 mm x 9.525 mm). The Ruud part number for the filter is 54-23217-03 .

The specifications sheet for the Ruud UBHC series air handlers is available here: http://www.coburns.com/images/PDFs/h22-517rev1.pdf . The filter size information is on page 3 and page 12.

I've found the filter at one online vendor: http://www.patriot-supply.com/products/showitem.cfm/RHEEM_68_101807_03 . (This is a common filter that fits several manufacturer's air handlers.)

I hope this helps.

You must be kidding. You want a video?

If the filter is in the air handler, it is in the bottom. Often filters are not in the units themselves, but in the main return grill in the ceiling. But if it is in the unit then:

Turn the unit off at the thermostat. (That way the fan is not sucking the filter up,) Then take the bottom door off. It is a small door and a pain, but you can do it. Pull out the filter. It is a washable black plastic framed thing. Then wash it and put it back in. Then make sure to put the door back on and turn the thermostat back on.

Ac heat not working

Rheem/Ruud are the same equipment with different stickers; they come off the same assembly line. 1) check that you have full air flow: all the vents are open and clear, the return grill is clear and the filter is CLEAN. 2) On the older models there are 2 each 1/4" screws on the air handler that have to be removed and that allows the panel where the FACTORY FILTER is located. If you have a filter in your return air grill, remove the factory filter, if not, leave it in and remember to clean it. While the bottom cover is open, look at the fan to see if it is clogged. DO NOT put your hands in there unless the main power to the A/H is OFF! 3) Go outside to the condenser and you will see a small red or green button at the bottom of the control panel access. Press it. If it clicks and the unit comes on, either the air flow inside is too low (see above) or the unit is overcharged with refridgerant. If everything is clean and there it plaenty of air flow, you will need a technician with the proper gauges, tools and knowledge to set the charge correctly. Be smart: price shop and get references. Open the access panel on the air handler in the attic and take a look at the evaporator coil. If you have no airflow, and you just changed the air filter, then you probably have a buildup of airborne crud on the coil that's blocking airflow. If you do have a layer of buildup blocking airflow through the coil in the air handler, just take a $5 fin comb and scrape all the crud off the coil fins. This can make a dramatic difference. Hope this helps! ;)
