Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

SOURCE: Can't mount my external Iomega harddisk anymore

Try running disk utility. If it can see the hard disk but it isn't mounting it, try clicking "repair" or if that is greyed out, "verify" then "repair". Be warned that this could take a very long time, so leave it over night. It may even look like it has crashed. This may either fix the problem, or tell you that the drive can't be repaired (in the data sense) and it will hopefully mount it read-only so you can retrieve the data. You will need another drive with enough space to copy everything off. If copying data fails, try copying folder by folder or even file by file to get off all files that are ok, as otherwise it will just give up when it finds corrupt data.

If disk utility cannot see the hard disk at all, try the other interfaces (usb/firewire/sata). If it can't see it in any of them, try it on another computer. If none of them can read it then the unit is dead. You may be able to retrieve your data by taking the unit apart, removing the hard disk, and placing it in another enclosure. This will probably void your guarantee though, so it's a choice you may have to make :(

Any Hard drives before getting to used with MAC OsX has to be formatted according to the MAC file system...
I think that is the problem you are facing...
Make sure your hard disk is not formatted for any windows OS and try to reformat for MAC OsX...
It should work...

SOURCE: HI... Can I clone my

http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm this program will allow you to clone your hard drive directly to your external, you can then expand the partition using 'disk management' which can be found typing it into the 'run' window from the start menu. this will erase the external drive however and i wouldnt recommend booting from it externally.

It depends on the physical size of the drive.

I have an iomega 31868500 external hard drive I haven't used in years. I now want to use it to store files from my wife's Toshiba laptop running Windows 7.

Hi Jack

It would be pointless having a hard drive fixed to Read Only.
I don't think there is a switch setting to set as Read Only.
The original Iomega (early days) removable cartridge drives had a plastic tab on the cartridge to allow it to be write protected (RO).
So perhaps the Iomega Enclosure (Interface electronics inside) is getting out of date.
The oldest part of your drive will be the Enclosure & USB port.

I would suggest you open the enclosure and take out the actual hard drive. Should still be good to use.

Drives are either 2.5" or 3.5" Size Standard.
Eg Pocket drives are 2.5" size, Slower operation as they use 5 volt only. One bump during use can kill them!

3.5" use 5v & 12v & spin much faster (3500 to 7200rpm) for high speed transfer. Eg Movie Streaming / Fast Backups and are more robust.

The internal connector will either be the older IDE / ATA type connector Or
The new universal SATA connector (serial ATA much smaller)

You will need to determine this.....

The Fix:
The most convenient enclosure these days would be a DOCK type that allows you to plug in both 2.5 & 3.5 SATA drives. AND use USB 3 as a faster Future Proof Hard Drive
Then you can plug one in for Movies and another for Music and a third for Backups. Each drive purchased separately.
Eg 3x 1TB should be cheaper than 3 separate enclosed drives.

I'm sure there is a dual DOCK also for the older ATA connector.
But all future Drives will be SATA.

Once you determine what connector your drive uses then you can plug it in to the more modern housing and format the drive for Windows NTFS or FAT32 (Windows & Mac & TV's)

Cheers
Good Luck

Where can one buy a replacement pcb control board for a iomega 'ultramax plus' unit? My existing one has a damaged IC component at 'U4'....and possibly more elsewhere on the board.

No one sells what you're looking for. I'm assuming the drives were in a raid configuration which means you can't put them in an enclosure to get the data off. Your best bet is to purchase another unit and replace the drives. This thing is hella expensive. If you don't need the data you can get a different one bigger and cheaper. http://www.sears.com/iomega-33991-esata-firewire-800-firewire-400-usb-2.0-500gb/p-00389575000P

My Iomega Ultramax external hard drive continues has only one problem. This problem occurs every time I plug it into my computers. The hard drive at random times, disconnects itself without being told to....

It sounds like it is losing contact in the USB cable connecting it. If you have another USB cable, I would advise you to try it instead, it could be a problem with the cable. If the cable is not the issue, clean off the contacts in both the USB ports of the computer and the external hard drive itself to make sure there is nothing disrupting contact. Should this fail, it may be a faulty USB driver board in the enclosure, in which case you can contact Iomega and find out if this is a known issue. A cheap fix should the driver board be the issue would be to buy another enclosure and transfer the drive into the new enclosure. Enclosures can be purchased for under 20$. Should even a new enclosure not work, the logic board on the drive itself is malfunctioning and Iomega should be notified and will hopefully offer you a replacement.

Sata drives are backwards compatable so should work no problem but some drives have a jumper that needs to be reset ,check the website for your drive.
