I have a panasonic SC-pt90 home theatre & cannot get sound from my Toshiba SL738B tv through my speakers. Connection is through a HDMI cable

Ideally, which way is sound traveling in an A/V scenario? I believe the best audio should always make its first stop at the Hi-Fi; and the best Video from each source should make its first (perhaps ONLY) stop at the TV/Monitor.

The TV-programming probably comes from a Cable- or Sat Box, which is itself an audio component with digital and analog outputs. Treat it like any other high-end audio source and run it straight to the SC-PT90.

The TV/monitor only NEEDS high-end video from everything and minimal viedo from the recever for management. Maybe analog audio from the cable box for watching the news.

I have a 50 inch plasma with cable and trying to get the 480 series surround sound to work on cable and not just dvd.

The TV is irrelevant to the discussion. Cable TV comes from the cable box. It will have digital and analog audio outputs.

If your electronics accepts the digital input, use IT for TV audio. Configure that input as "TV" so you can find it.

Run the analog audio from the cable box to the TV if it accepts it, just in case you want to watch and listen to lo-fi programming, like news, without the receiver turned on.

Denon avr-1804/884, speakers Bose vcs center, Bose acoustimass 5 series 3 speaker system, Bose 201 series 4. All speakers play in test mode, with tuner, dvd, phono, cassette. The left side speakers will...

You don't say how "TV audio" is entering the system.

My guess is you're using analog audio Out from the TV into an analog input on the Denon. One channel failing would probably be the Left Channel cable failing or not seated.

I always recommend bypassing the TV audio entirely if the programming comes from somewhere other than its own antenna, as TV audio electronics add nothing good to the process.

If you're using cable box, sat box, game, whatever, ITS audio is best sent directly to your Denon's specialized audio hardware - digitally, if possible, to preserve multichannel possibilities.

You could also run standard analog audio from the cable box to the TV analog Audio IN if you just want to watch news and weather on TV speakers without the Denon involved.

It would be the rare TV that originated anything approaching the sound quality of any other audio
source in your home or could process digital multichannel audio anywhere near as well as the
Yamaha. What model TV did you say this was and how is the audio from it getting into the Yamaha?

If you have an RCA audio pair going from it to the Yamaha that would provide the bare minumum quality stereo-only analog audio that the TV is processing. Its internal audio controls could be part of the problem of why the Yamaha can't "hear" it..

TV-related audio is best derived from as close to its source as possible. Your cable, satellite DVD, BD all have superior digital multichannel audio outputs. Why would you want to filter them through the TV first?

Those sources may also have HDMI which would be great for the TV and the receiver; they also have
standard RCA stereo outputs, each of which could be suitable to run to the TV's RCA inputs if you only want to watch news or weather with lo-fi sound.

Bottom line recommendation: BEST video to the TV; best audio to the Yamaha. Turn the TV speakers off unless you want to watch the news. Then turn the Yamaha off and save some on the electricity.

I can't get the tv sound to play through the theater system, what can i do to fix this. I have the rca jacks that came with the system hooked up and when i play movies on the system i can watch it and hear....

Get the TV-related audio from your cable or satellite box if you have it. Use the highest quality multichannel output of either one (if available). Also run the stereo audio out from it to the TV just in case you want to watch lo-fi news and weather without the HTS turned on.
