    Hi

Thanks for the information. However I have not received any Installation CD. There seems to be a 4 GB Partition where probably the installation program resides like in Laptops. Most laptops get into the installation mode on pressing F12 at boot. So how do I do it here.

Usually the problem lies with your Software or Windows Installation. The problem is when you Boot your computer it can't read because some how the hard drive got scrambled. You have to Install a fresh windows to solve the problem, no other way around it. Obvioulsy, its no good to you in this condition, Insert your Installation disk and turn the computer off and then back on, Install a new Windows. Good Luck. When the computer asks you if you want to install windows to that drive, you might want to consider if you have to delete that partition, and then create it again, after you do Windows will automatically format the disk for a fresh installation.

Looks like you have to access recovery features as you power up, probably pressing CTRL and F11 repeatedly or whatever key combination is particular to your dell. A link below is to manuals and drivers for your machine.

Bear in mind some recovery processes can wipe data to restore to factory defaults. If you can recover via a system restore point, you probably will not lose data. If not, your recovery may require going to factory defaults. If you manage to use a system restore point, you may yet have the viruses or malware hanging around. You might download an anti-malware program (portable version) to a usb stick and make use of it from that location. There is a means to boot the computer from a usb stick which has a linux rescue OS upon it. That would enable you to recover some data before trying something like having to go to factory defaults (it is too late then).

The above page will have some drivers you may need at some point.

If this machine was running XP, it probably had XP SP2 installed. But any updates after that are likely lost unless you go to a shop and have such put on. Microsoft is not going to do it. If you can connect to the internet if restores to XP SP2, you it possibly will ask to activate windows. See if you can do it by clicking "over the internet."

Bear in mind you will have to reinstall something like Zonealarm as a firewall and AVG as an antiviral if you have gone to factory defaults. If you have gone to simply a system restore, try to save something of previously installed software keys, maybe using Belarc Advisor or Magic Jellybean. If you have gone to factory defaults, you will have to reinstall MS Office suite, for instance, if you had it. MIght as well download the current version of Firefox. Elsewise, you will be looking at a very old browser.

Wont load win xp on gx 260

Hi,
There are a number of reasons why XP won't install or hangs halfway through the install process.
The main culprits are bad sectors on the hard drive. Poorly seated or faulty system memory and of course scratched CD or a dirty optical lens.

You are going to have to go through this troubleshooting process to determine what the problem is and what you have to do to resolve the problem.

Start by cleaning the install disk and the optical lens, remove and clean the system memory and the slots, check the cables and then try to reinstall.

If you run into the same problem i would be suspecting the hard drive.
As far as i know Dell have their own utility.

Turn on the computer. When the DELL™ logo appears, press <F12> immediately. If you wait too long and the Microsoft® Windows® logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Then shut down your computer and try again.

When the boot device list appears, highlight Diagnostics and press <Enter>.
If you don't have the Dell Diagnostics Utility on the computer then something like Hiren's boot CD will be able to check the drive for errors in the hard disk tools section.

Regards.

To make sure you install back again your Windows Vista and Windows XP is this.
First:
  1. Go to Bios Setup and change the setting of your Hard Disk drive from Sata to IDE mode.
  2. Boot priority the CD/DVD Rom to run your Bootable CD/DVD.
This setting are quietly working, good luck!
