Stale ice after a new water coil is installed

My ice was good until last fall when the overload relay was replaced. At the time the Sears service guy noticed the copper water tube to the icemaker was bad so installed a new plastic one. Ever since then the ice is very stale, like dirty sox. My tap water is good, my fridge and freezer food is fine. Sears came in October and cleaned the icemaker. Last week they installed a new icemaker. The ice tastes worse! What is it?

John - thanks. Sears did remove the copper and put in plastic-type line (could it have a pair of dirty sox stuck in the line?). That's when the problem started, with the new line. My tap water is good. there is no filter on this fridge, but what would I be fitlering if I put one in, can you filter out a mold smell? The hose that leads directly to the icemaker is clean (I swabbed it with a q-tip). I've been tossing ice like crazy, but the moldy yuck smell still comes back. Perhaps I need to go back to ice cube trays.

    Here's a solution from a year ago:
[poss drain hole/vents blocked clean vents with bicarb, drains with clorine bleach(rinse afterward)
smell is your f/f making its own penicillin]

Could this be a problem? And how do I get bleach in the vents?

The water became stale inside copper lines feeding ice maker most likely. Dump your ice for a few times until this clears you should have ask for some money back for copper poison, (joking) Thanks,Sea Breeze

Testimonial: "Thanks. It is a little scary. I have a plumber coming next week and I'll ask him to take a look at the valve and line. Perhaps the Sears guy (same one, three times) couldn't catch it. Our Chapel Hill water tests very well, so the problem is the line or fridge. I don't think I need a filter. For now, I'm emptying out a lot of ice and putting the few I have in a plastic baggie into my iced tea. (It was not this way before the new plastic line was put on.)"

Wow! I have done some reading about a year ago of a fungus/algae that sticks to the inside of the plastic lines. You really must have some distance for this to be happening between constantly moving water and you ice maker. Temperature and the water for the ice maker to refill is giving time for this algae to grow faster than the possibly pretreated water feeding your refrigerator. Yes Lowes sells an inline filtering system/cartridge. Just snap a plastic line in and out. Not shure about solving the fungae. Here is some important reading below...Let me know if I can help,Thanks, JT

Thanks Again for the Testimonial! Reading back over your solution from a year ago. That solution was for something smelly water and gunk (oily onion waste picked up during normal defrost and carried to the condensate collection tray under refrigerator) Water and ice (during Defrost) tend to collect these smells going out of the refrigerator/freezer. Check all door seals and see if while doors are closed if air is being drawn in the exit of pipe. Hard to do but needed so we can prevent this drain pipe smell in freezer ice and whatever food is exposed inside your refrigerator. Example a Central Air Conditioner P-Trap, Thanks, John Tripp.

Ice maker not working I think it is the solenoid on the water valve. Also the overload relay keeps kicking in and makes a vibrating noise. What does the overload relay do anyway?

The relay lets all the coils inside the compressor get energized momentarily to get the beast going. Then it drops out half the copper when the motor gets up to speed. This prevents overheating of the copper inside the compressor.1202614.jpgWith time they simply fall apart from the beating they take. Yours might be on the way out. 8711921.jpgthe water valve is the cheapest component to replace AND if you need a new ice maker you will already have a water valve to go with it.

I have a new kenmore ac unit model 580.75101500 i bought about two weeks ago and installed last week. its been blowing ice cold as it should no problems until today. Now the ac turns on runs about 5...

Take it back or call Sears. A 2 week old unit should not do that. I'll assume the settings are right like set on AC Auto or Max cool and not just fan. Are the coils icing or were they icing behind the filter? If not, I think it may need to be serviced.

Kenmore 22' bottom freezer refrig-freezer not cold

i changed the overload relay- is it possible that a dusty underside of the refrigerator is causing insufficient airflow over the evaperator coil makeing the unit work harder? I also noticed the relay was discoloured when i took the old one appart, but never the less the unit works great. The part cost me 17.99 plus tax at Sears, it took me no time to get the relay off and replaced. cool huh

Mulitple problems with my side by side

Sorry to hear you had so many problems. but DONT LET THAT GUY NEAR YOUR REFRIGERATOR!! If he indeed replaced the compresser it should have come with a new start relay and overload that would have been installed at the time the compresser was replaced. the kit he put on was a Hard start kit for compressers having problems staerting up .....but you stated he Just replaced the compresser right? so why should you need a hard start kit installed? the compresser may not be installed properly or the coreect freon charge placed in the unit. or has a leak in his solder joints but by no means should you have to install a hard start kit on a NEW compresser Hope this helps you. BTW Did he give you any Warrty.? if so you should not pay him anything until he fixes the problem

Kenmore 106.53603202 stopped cooling making a clicking sound

The compressor is locked up. The clicking noise is the thermal overload turning the relay off and on. The only solutions you have are installing a hard start capacitor. Ther local appliance parts supplier will have this. Its easy to install I personally have had a 50% success rate with these, but its relatively cheap fix if it works, as the other solution is a new compressor. Good luck.

Filtered Water tastes "off"

Could be something foreign in the water line on the fridge side...or somewhere in the ice maker/ water dispenser inside the fridge......when it tastes stale....maybe there is something maybe mold or something that is part of the plastic ????
I usually add an in-line filter to my water line before it reaches the fridge so that 99% of the elements are trapped before it gets to the fridge. My original filter is still good. Maybe someone needs to inspect the ice maker with a a bright light and an inspection mirror to see if there is any thing that looks suspicious....this is only a suggestion but leaving the line disconnected for so long could even cause something like a small insect to crawl inside the line...
